Best Supplier for Gaming/Downloads

Okay, my exchange was finally upgraded there last week so I am ordering BB very shortly.

I mostly use the net atm for gaming (CS on 56k), but not much downloads because of the 56k.

All I want is a ping less than 200 as I have now and hopefully below 90.

While the downloads don't have to be fast, seeing as I'm so used to 56k, I'll think I'll be spoiled with anything over my current 1-3kbps :D

I want to get good value as well :)

So if anyone can recommend a provider for me.

Also could someone ping this IP: 213.228.215.134:27020 as this is the server I play on a lot!

IOL they have low pings, not as low as eircom but have the extra leeway on the cap being double the size

UTV is fab for downloads and that lovely non-enforced cap. Gaming is... okay, usually. Ping's nowhere near as low as eircom/iol etc, usually around 50-90ms to UK servers.

TOD server always gives me horrible reg and ping though.

    Oh and a second thing.

Can I go for IOLS free trial and then go to Eircom or UTV or any other provider and have to pay for the connection fee?

ping it without using the port :)

My vote is with IBB due to not only leaving my phone line alone but the asym. uploads and downloads which is great

    - try to upload a file using dsl :(

pings are average for gaming - and dowload rates are 30 - 70 kbps ( breeze home )

    eircom radsl!

I haven't really come close to the cap yet and I do my fair share of downloading torrentz

unfortunately eircom business dsl is crap for gaming compared to the eircom home dsl:(

If eircom ever give higher speed options for home dsl I hope they keep the interleaving low based like current radsl settings, I would love faster dsl in the future but not if it will have high interleving.

Well is IBB available in Waterford?

btw, I've ruled out UTV, thanks to http://www.aroach.utvinternet.ie/ping2.jpg . I won't be splashing out on BB for only slightly better performance for the main reason I'd be getting BB!

??? UTV have essentially the same free trial as IOL. Eircom are only offering the first 2 months free (it's not a "free trial").

If you switch providers, there will probably be some additional cost, and there will definitely be a period without any service.

    Velcrow- kb or KB?

kb or KB that is the question :) ( I could not resist !!! )

KBps I mean - althought in this topsie turvy world who really Knows ( or is that knows )

Heres a usless definition I found!

The meaning of the words kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte change when they are used in the context of network data rates. A rate of one kilobyte per second (KBps) equals 1000 (not 1024) bytes per second. One megabyte per second (MBps) equals one million (106, not 220) bytes per second. One gigabyte per second (GBps) equals one billion (109, not 230) bytes per second.

To avoid some of this confusion, networkers typically measure data rates in bits per second (bps) rather than bytes per second (Bps) and use the terms kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte only when referring to disk space.

    Now Im confused ????

Well, I've decided to go for EsatBT, the 3months no obligation trial gives me time to sort out a job to pay for it and the very good gaming performance will allow me to play games non-stop.

Thanks to all those who replied with advice.

If you're playing games non-stop, how are you going to find a job!

    :D
