Plumbing question

I don't know anything about plumbing but recently in my house after I turn on the hot water tap or shower etc there is a loud noise from what I presume is the hot water tank in the attic. It's not a banging noise & it lasts for a few minutes & then is gone. Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this?
