PC to Router connection

I thought I'd just check this before I go mad....

    I have a PC, I also have a Cisco 2621 Router. If I
connect the PC to the router using a normal Cat 5
straight-through cable neither the router port or the
PC port comes up. The router complains of a cable
    or transceiver problem.

If I then plug the router in to an ordinary unmanaged
switch, and then connect the PC to the same switch,
both the router port and the PC port come up, and I
    can ping away happily.

So, I'm just checking that when I directly connect a PC to
a Cisco router port, I should be using a straight-through
cable rather than a crossover or any other type of
cable, cos I'm stumped as to why one setup works
    and the other doesnt.....

(By the way, I've checked all the cables I've used
    and they're all fine.)

No, you should use a cross over cable for a direct connection. The switch effectively crosses the cable over for you.
