Far Cry crashing

Maybe someone can shed some light on this: I installed a new radeon 9800 pro about 2 weeks ago. Installed far cry a few days later. Unfortunately it keeps crashing after a few minutes play. Other games had no problems, neither did 3dmark03. (Running latest Omega drivers).

Anyways, I decided to reinstall Windows just to see if that was the cause of the problem - unfortunately it made little difference (besides increasing my 3dmark03 score by about 100 :)).

I'm not overclocking anything, and my PSU is a 400W Antec. Full specs in my sig.

I get 3 of the following events in Windows (xp pro) application log after far cry crashes:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.
    You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description;
see Help and Support for details.
The following information is part of the event: 7.

Any ideas anyone? What little I've seen of the game so far has been very good. I've managed to play through the first 2 levels between crashes.

Did you patch Far Cry and try Catalyst drivers?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I have patched far cry to v1.1, haven't yet tried the ATI catalysts. Guess they're the next step.

    I'd say it's the omega's breaking it.

I had a similar problem but when I patched the ATI drivers it resolved it for me.

heh, installing the latest cats after having the latest omega drivers caused no end of headaches for me.
you might have to do another install of windows:D

    /shakes fist

will uninstalling the Omegas, rebooting, running driver cleaner, rebooting and then installing the Catalysts not be enough?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

1st in Display properties set everything to perfromance Direct3d and opengl.
Then Set the game to low and play away.
    Set Sound also to Low.

Keep notching up the graphics in game a bit until you happy ,that should stop it crashing.

I had this problem but it only happens when AI are on screen or helios coming at yah.

back in my day, we didn't have this newfangled driver cleaner...

hmmm, maybe i wouldn't have had to reinstall windows if i'd used that:(

I only reinstalled last night. Things (besides far cry!) seem a lot more stable. (I don't think I completely eradicated the nvidia drivers when I swapped my Ti4200 out for the 9800 pro)

i was having a crashing problem as well with this game but i reckon it was down to my machine overheating
its a great game, and long so you'll get your moneys worth
i'm on the end of game baddie and hes a bastard to kill, 2 nights so far i've been trying to kill him
the tips say you need a rocket launcher but im arsed if im going back to a previous save to pick one up ;)

Don't use the latest catalyst 4.6 drivers.I've read on other forums some 9800pro users were having problems including game crashes with this set. Most 9800pro users recomend catalyst 4.4 or the omega equivilent
Personally, i have a 9700pro using the catalyst 4.5 with no problems.Hope you get your problem sorted soon because its an excellent game.

I'll try all this stuff whenever I get home tonight (which may be a bit late, going to the dentist for some pain after work )

installing the ATI catalysts (v4.6) seems to have fixed it, woohoo!

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Shortly after I posted the above, it crashed again. However, I have since updated my BIOS and disabled AGP fast writes and haven't had anything crash since.

Thought this information might be useful to somebody.
