    A score draw.

Portugal to go through on penalties after Beckam, Owen and Scholes all miss.

    The Evening Herald says:

'It's time to get behind England

It is one of the things that baffles foreign visitors to our shores. They cannot understand how so many Irish people support English football teams but pray with fervour that the English international team get slaughtered in high style.
Maybe now is the time to throw away a horrible prejudice.
    So let's back England tonight.'

And Hairy Homer says, the Evening Herald is hardly in a position to pontificate to anyone about horrible prejudices. So it can **** off.

Allez Forza Geh Mal Huud Huud whatever Portugal!!!!!! G'wan the lads!!!!

I don't actually think this is going to be the most exciting match in the world, both teams have qualified in poor form. Portugal need the likes of Figo and Deco to step it up a gear and England certainly need Owen to do the same. Judging by the amount of England fans going to the match, it might well feel like England are at home.

I'll still go for 2-0 Portugal.

Was that Paul Hyland by any chance?

I'd say it'll be a score draw, with England probably going out on penos. I wouldn't fancy Owen to score, and the pressure on Rooney is going to be huge.

England to win. 2-1 or 3-1.

all square after normal time (possibly 1-1)
Engerland score first silver goal followed closely by Portugal, England sneak another silver with mins to go...

    noooooooo....
I have a meeting in the morning involving a couple of Engerland lads, could be a pain of a day...I think I'll emigrate.
if thet get over Portugal , they'll win the bloody thing...Im off to the South Pole to live indefinitely!!

3-2 to England after 90 mins.

Portugal to expose the English Defence. 3-0.(I'm serious)

    Ronaldo, Nuno Gomes and Cavalho(sp)

BTW got odds on PP earlier of 80-1 for Cole and G Neville to be sent off for fouling Ronaldo.

    2-1 portugal

    Portugal 1-2 England .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

England are scoring goals and Portugal are not, both have dodgy defences but I think Owen, Rooney et al will be better than the Portugese attack.

    England 2 - 1 Portugal.

    Mike.

England aren't good enough to beat Portugal. The hype surrounding England at the moment will bring them down as it always does. And as usual there'll be one player to blame for their demise. Their defence was shown up by Croatia and was only plastered over by even worse defending by Croatia.

I reckon it will be 2-1 or 3-1 to Portugal, Nuno Gomes (2) and C. Ronaldo for Portugal and Rooney for England.

3-2 engerland, rooney hat trick :)

I am never surprised by how hard it is for some people to admit that England are playing well at the moment.

Based on performances so far in the tournament you would certainly have to favour an England win.

England's attacking build up against Croatia, I thought was really good.

England scored one good goal against Croatia, the others were very poor defending on the Croat's part.

    They will struggle as usual.

None of England's goals were the result of bad defending. They were 4 well taken goals.

After going 1-0 down, England played some very intelligent football. I certainly could not see them failing to score.

Now, I am not for one second suggesting that England have suddenly turned into the best football team in the world. But credit where credit is due. Portugal have hardly set the tournament on fire.

Most neutrals would predict an England win on the basis of play in the tournament. The bookies have England down as favourites not just in England.....and when is the last time you saw a broke bookie?

This just goes back to the point, you're as good as your last match.

England would be out if it wasn't for Rooney, he is the only player that has played consistantly well for the 3 games. They sat back against the French as soon as they scored, France had 5 more shots on goal, 151 more passes, 3 more corners and over 7 minutes more possession. Plain and simply, even though France scored two late goals from set pieces, they were by far the better team on the night.

Against the Swizz, Switzerland were by far the better team for an hour until Haas got sent off. Again, over the 90 minutes, the stats are all in Switzerlands favour. The Swizz had more shots at goal (but only 1 on target luckily for England), more passes and even more possession than the French had against England.

The match against Croatia was a good performance I must admit.

Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and France have all been better than England IMO. Judging by form, England are on par with Portugal, Italy and Holland.

Portugal were the better team against Greece, Russia and Spain.

stats are everything BTW. If a team loses a match and the stats are really in their favour, they were unlucky to lose.

Stats are only everything to trainspotters...

The only statistic that counts is the number of goals for and against in a match.

You don't win leagues or cups with, shots, corners, freekicks or anything else....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 498 ✭✭Harry2001

Stats mean nothing - it's who puts the round thing in the rectangle thingy the most times and England did it more times than Switzerland and Croatia

Tonight is too close to call IMO - totally 50 - 50

I think the Portugese will be tight on Rooney and he won't have as much impact. Can't see England winning in 90 mins. 1-1 after normal time and Portugal to win with silver goal.

I hope they've been practising thier penalities!

    From ITV
"I know more or less who will take the penalties if needed," Eriksson admitted.

"I will have seven, eight or even nine players who want to take them. You can't do it before because you don't know who will be on the pitch."

He added: "There could be injuries. One player could have played very well and another poorly so confidence comes into it.

"Another might have cramp. You have to wait and see what happens but the first thing is to have the players from which to choose."

Five from Rooney, Michael Owen, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes are expected to take the first five penalties - if they are still on the pitch.

    Mike.

Of course goals are all the counts over the 90 minutes but you said:

"I am never surprised by how hard it is for some people to admit that England are playing well at the moment.

England haven't been performing aswell as some scorelines suggest. Portugal are also playing better than them IMO. They murdered Russia and definitely deserved to beat Spain. I may be biased in choosing the stats I want to choose but I'm certainly not biased in saying that Portugal are in better form than England.

BTW Paddy Power have Portugal as favourite:

    Portugal 8-5
    England 7-4
    Draw 2-1.

You could at least come up with a good answer to it. 3 of the goals England scored against Croatia were as a result of bad defending by the Croats.

I hope you are made happy that as a result of the hatred and vitriol I was subjected too tonight I have decided to leave Ireland.

I am going back to England. I hope you all rot in hell you nasty fu-ckers.

I will be heading back to England. A country where I am free to walk down the street without being told to **** off back to my own country.

I really hope Ireland endures the four horseman of the apocalypse and that you all die alone and unhappy.

I realise that this may result in me becoming unpopular with certain people here, but thankfully I really could not give a **** for the opinons of certain people here.

I have met many nice people in Ireland, unfortunatly I have met far too many horrible people for it to remain wortwhile to stay in this god forsaken hell hole of a country.

I would like to leave on a positive note, I have been offered a lovely job in London paying me what I earn in Euro in sterling, to do exactly what I do now. I will be more than happy to accept this job, much to the cheering of certain people within these quarters. To be honest cheer away, but remember while you are cheering, I will be happy earning my proper money back home.

Well at any **** who decide to cheer on whoever England are playing and yet still support English clubs.

either you are anti-english or you are not.

If you are anti-english then please don't enter my country again.

You probably won't get to see this but, you say you decided to leave because of the abuse you got tonight, that was a pretty quick job offer.
