I think england have shown great character throughout, maybe this will show.

however penalities isnt the fairest of means to seperate the two teams.

Wow, I honestly thought England were finished once they conceded that second goal. I hope they go onto win it, you never know, James might just redeem himself here!

Cheeky keeper took off his gloves to save Vassel's penalty.

Unlucky England: ( I was actually rooting for them

Don't think Beckham can be England captain anymore. 2 missed penalties by him cost England dearly. If he had scored the first against France they would of ended up playing Greece. And again he missed another penalty. Poor England...

    What a crackin game.
Edge of the seat stuff. Didn't agree with the refaree on a lot of things.
What the hell was up with the penalty spot ?

In a sense I am sorta glad Portugal are through I couldn't bear anymore from the english media or commentators. They are a big downfall on what is a good team and that's why a good few people dislike them.

Just hope the other games are as exciting.

Great game Portugal deserved it simply trying to win, it was a foul and portugal had a dodgy on the line over the line thing so it evened out.

What a goal by Costa worthy of winning any game.

That was one of the worst refereeing displays I've seen in years. He disallowed a perfectly good England goal and gave every single thing Portugals ways.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 493 ✭✭muffen

I have never been an England supporter, I sometimes like watching them play but most of the times I just think they are a little too "bigheaded' for my liking.

However, what happened today was not deserved. It doesn't matter that Portugal had the pressure on for the longest time. England fought hard, they did what they had to and they never gave up.

I really feel sorry for England... and for the referee because he is the crappiest one around!

It's definitely why I dislike them. And now they'll have a few reasons to blame on the team going out rather than just not playing very well (refereeing decisions, rooney's injury, penalty spot)

Still, as we all know, penalties are a ****ty way to go out.

The bad news is that the FA have already said Erikssons job is safe......:( Thats no way to loose or win a game.

Well he can't have the Chelsea job well not for a year anyway :)

Sorry for England was supporting them for this match and they should have won. Dreadful decision on that disallowed goal. But on the other hand Portugal were the better team in the game.

England should never let a game get to penno's, they just have no luck at all about them.

You see, the problem there is, they are English commentators, commenting on England game for England supporters. Of course they're going to be biased, just like RTE are when Ireland are playing. It's a unique situation really and would be like German television broadcasting German games in England.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

Penalties are a crap way of seperating two teams but the best team won. I don't think the Campbell goal should have been disallowed but I'd like to see it again without the bias of English pundits (as the Irish would be in the same situation). Campbell was running around the box like a maniac and seemed to push a Portuguese player when he was going up for his first header. The BBC didn't show that during the highlights after 90 minutes, they just presumed it was his second header that got it disallowed. When Campbell went up for his second header the keeper couldn't do a thing because both him and Terry were on top of him. Since the keeper would have got to the ball only for the two players on top of him is it not a free kick?

As I said, from what I seen it should have been a goal but I'd love to see it again and I'd love to hear what the ref has to say about it.

True but when commentating on other games they constantly go on about the England team, last time I watched a game on rte that didn't happen.

garth crooks just said england were playing against 13 men

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭thejollyrodger

Poor England, I wasnt too keen all the england hype but I was cheering on england at the end.

I have to say it was a terrible way to go out. A lot of things didnt go englands way and penalites suck. I wouldnt like to have to take one.

Portugal deserved to win - without a doubt..

after owens goal - england closed the shop.. but forgot to close the windows.. sven must have been watching old ireland tapes - cos all england played was long balls.. which never worked.

fair play to portugal - for playing football. amen

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

Funnily enough, that's pretty much exactly what the RTE commentary team were saying too.

Portugal played the better football, but the ref robbed England. I feel really bad for Darius Vassell, Campbell and Cole. Hell, I even feel bad for Beckham and Neville!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

Other than the goal, what did the ref do that was extremely unfair to England?

BTW - Is there any site that might have the disallowed goal up in the next couple of days? Preferably from behind the goal as that gives the clearest view.

edit: I found a site that might have it soon, it has the Beckham missed peno against France anyway:

yeah, it doesn't matter that Portugal played better.. they couldn't put the ball behind the goalie, and for that they do not deserve to win.

Hold on to the ball best you want, we all know that its the goals that count in the end (<--- see my point)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

If it happened to Ireland RTE would be just as bad

I have decided to support England (as long as they are not playing Ireland) since I was lucky enough to go to one of the World Cup Matches in Japan and I saw and talked to a number of England fans that supported Ireland. Most people here mouthing off against England support English teams anyway. Basicially I think your all a pack of hypocrites

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

By the way, as a goalkeeper. I myself would feel hard done by if the goal was given. Terry was leaning on Ricardo's shoulder which stopped him from jumping for the ball. I would be looking for a free myself.

For the 80 minutes between the first two goals, it was an awful match. You'd think England would have learned from the France game that they can't sit back and absorb pressure for the whole game. After the second goal went in, the game really came alive. Great goal by Rui Costa.

Beckham's going to get lynched. Possibly literally by the impending riots.

Yeah it was a peach but what was young Chuckle brother doing, I hope that wasn't an attempted tackle. Between him and Scoles ManU need to get some proper tackling training going !!!

The keeper was flaping about like a girl even before Terry got near him, he never left the ground!!!!!!!

A shocking decision from the ref, and it does not matter that England did not deserve the goal it should have been given

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭AngelofFire

The disallowed goal was a shocking decision but england didnt deserve to win. They were hanging on by the skin of their teeth, The midfield was non existent tonight.

Did anybody see luis figo? what a bad sport,he walks off in a huff when he gets subbed. I have never before seen such a display of petulance.Full Credit to young ronaldo scoring a penalty at that age under that much pressure.Great finish by Rui costa. Ive no sympathy for Beckham to be honest,he has had a terrible tournament.

And what was his reason for never leaving the ground?! Oh yeah, the fact that Terry was putting all of his body weight on Ricardo's shoulder.

You try and jump with someone leaning on you.

I think the disallowed goal was a 50/50 decision, I've seen the goals given and i've seen them disallowed. Overall the better team won on the night though. Costa's goal was good enough to win any match.

The team that scores the most goals wins.

Who we, or the referee even, thinks deserves to win does not matter... the team that scores the most goals go through.

That disallowed goal, and even taking the free kick from the wrong spot that quickly, was very bad by the referee... what he did was wrong... england should have gone through because in the end, they scored more goals!

I am fully supporting England here... and I feel terrible for them ... doesn't matter how they played... its only the goals that count.. except when the referee is a [insert bad word here] seeing things that aren't there...
