just want to let anyone who is trying to get broadband know that just because eircom say that your line has failed doesn't mean they are actually telling you the truth!!

We just moved into a brand new house 1.8 miles from galway city centre on the headford road. Got the phone line installed only to ring eircom to find out that altough we have all new lines and we live 1 mile from the mervue exchange that our line failed. I wont go into the details of the screaming phone calls where one operator told me that we could NEVER get broadband....

Anyway met a retail rep from the Carphone Warehouse who rang up for me. She said that there is a 72 hour test that they can do and normally when your line fails they have never even done this test!!

In the meantime we sent a stinker of an email to eircom regarding an internet article about how the EU have invested 9 million into a braodband network for galway and it was launched on the first of june. The e-mail was fairly harsh and questioned whether eircom are actually failing lines because they make more money if people stay on dialup!!!!

Got a phone call 2 weeks ago to say we could get braodband and signed up the same day. The next day we got a reply to the complaint email from a supervisor to say that we could not get broadband and thats it!!! Obviously this woman didn't even check for us, let alone look into why we were told we couldn't get it.

So the moral of the story is that eircom are f**kers and dont believe. 99% of people would have given up long before I did and wouldn't have gotten the broadband, but here I am today - connected at last!!!!

yeah and we got no answer back.

obviously she was some smart ass that thought we were as brainless as her. Well I'm not finished with her yet. She picked the wrong person to mess with!!!

you said it was a new line...

did you wait the 2 1/2 weeks for them to do the test on the line..

the line will show as a fail untill this has been done...

also screaming phone calls will do you no good when talking to anyone.. eircom or not... this will only cause the people on the other end of the line to be less helpfull

I had similar problems getting the line tested properly.

For a number of weeks, Eircom were adament that there was no way we could get broadband, in spite of living just over two kilometers from the exchange, and the neighbours only five doors up had a connection! Eventually, after many weeks and phone calls, one of the people at the sales desk noticed a noise on the line. After scheduling an engineer to look into it, it turned out that there had been a minor fault in the areas connection.

But did this fix it? Hell no. In spite of the record of the engineer being called out, and the line being both fixed and tested from the technical support side, and being given the all clear by them, we still had to wait the two and a half weeks for Eircom's broadband division to test the line themselves... Now exactly why the two departments don't share line detail tables in the databases is anyones guess, but thats the state of Irish telecommunications for you...

Total time from enquiry to connection: Six+ weeks.

And to the original sales guy who tried to fob off an ISDN connection on me: Look at me now, bitch...

Although eircom never told us that we had to wait 2.5 weeks, it was over 3 weeks before we tried to get broadband

I think most people will understand how screaming can be the resulting behaviour from being told that although you live in an area thats advertised as having broadband you will NEVER get braodband. I said I wouldn't go into details of the phone calls but to spell it out....... obviously the phonecalls didn't start off with a raised tone of voice but when you are told that there is a high probabliity that your next door neighbour could get broadband but you might not, that they have no idea why you cant, it could be that the lines are not good enough quality even though the house you just bought is in a totally new development that didn't exist 2 years ago, or that although you live within a stones through of the exchange the lines might be all twisted and go in funny directions so you are actually further away than the 5km requirement. I am a very patient person but when you have people patronising you and questioning your intelligence just because eircom seems to be a corrupt company that wants to keep people away from braodband because they will make more money I think most people tend to loose the rag just a little - hence the screaming.

Maybe you would never get to that screaming stage, than again maybe you would have given up after the first phone call, but it worked for me!!!

A friend of mine is a broadband rep in galway.....he is seriously very good and he will be able to tell you in a straight up answer "yes or no" if you can get it...He is very down to earth and not like the usual eircom drone

If you want i can PM you his number or get him to ring you?

    read the previouse post!!!!

    screaming won this time.

I know where you are coming from - i work in retail and I hate when people come in screaming because straight away you are on the defence. Like I said, I didn't start off screaming and the stinky mail was as a result of being told multiple times that although in a broadband area we could never get it. Regardless of your personal feelings we would not have gotten connected if we didn't push them. I didn't post up this thread for people to tell me that being "abusive" will never get me anywhere, it was to help people that were in the same boat - and when did I ever say I was abusive, talk about a case of 1+1=10 million!! There is a difference between being angry and being abusive.

I cant see how screaming got you anything? You asked someone else nicely and they said you could get it. Screaming go you nothing from eircom as far as i can see.

and Carphone Warehouse have been doing all eircom products for over a year. You get the same deal as eircom but you get €100 of any prepaid phone too.

If i wasn't the kind of person who got really angry when I was told this kind of stuff I would have said "ok so I cant get it, thanks a million anyway, sorry for bothering you, bye now" and given up. But because I am not like that the eircom rep saw how angry I was and got onto her supervisor. Plus screaming gave me the satisfaction of runing the day of the stupid brainless twats that lied to me, didn't help me like they could have etc etc.

and for the second time, can we stop bring peoples personal preferences into this with regard to how they would deal with the eircom dummies - just trying to help people!!!

for the last year we've been told by eircom that we cant get broadband cause even though we're within range our line is too bad. Then, out of the blue i get a phone call from esat asking me would i like to sign up to their 3 month free offer. I said i i sure would but ericom say our line fails. yer wan ask for my landline number which i provide and says that we can in fat get broadband.
I said are you sure that the line passed and it not just an test to see if we're connected to an upgraded exchange and she doubles checks it and says, yes u can get broadband. so i order it there and then.
being a skeptic i rang them up the next morning and got them to check again that it was really real and they said yes.
So at this stage just waiting for the installation package to arrive. still skeptical though. will only believe it when i'm connected and downloading porn, i mean linux iso's at 50Kbps+

    Well

Shinzons here a year and a half after broadband is launched and still no amount of screaming shouting e-mails phone calls bowing kneeling pleading asking nicely throwing myself on the mercy of whoevers on the other end of the line and generally kneedling Eircom has gotten me anywhere at all with them

Ive shouted to the top and to the bottom of both government and Eircom, I have on 11 separate occasions contacted comreg to no avail

Maybe im not shouting at the right people

I dunno it all just pisses me off immensely

More power to him for stamping his feet and getting what he wanted -- what's with the pathetic personal attacks? Does DMT work for eircom bb services and have to deal with irate customers on a frequent basis?

You're saying it's the wrong way to go about it but I'll let the results speak for themselves...

i also failed the iol bb test guess my line really is crap:confused:

Eircom have a "self service" product. They basiclly just turn your wire on, and it works. Once turned on, you can plug your DSL modem into the phone jack, and it'll work. Of course, you'll need filters for the other phone's, but they are usually in the box that comes with the modem.

    Another couple of things (don't flame me if I'm wrong, tho);

If you fail Eircom, but pass another operator, it may be cos you fail this new product. Each to thier own way. Esat, etc, may to some manual shi7 when they come out to your house.
Mostly, if your within 5K of an exchange, you can get BB.
It depends on the infastructure in the area. If the lines your going to use are shi7, the signal may[/ii] not get thru.
Salespeople for the most part aren't techies. They mostly did a degree in business. Not IT.
I say mostly, as I know a few sales peeps who know their shi7, but mainly if your anyway good with 'puters, you stick with them.
