Hi, can anyone point me to a newbie guide on powering your amp, like where to drill to run the cable from battery to boot, and all that, thanks

Not sure about any quick on-line guides, but the exact routing details for your wiring will depend very much upon the car in question.

If we're talking about a high-power amp that you want to run direct from the battery, then the important points are:

    1. Choose cables large enough for the anticipated current (which depends upon the amplifier rating).

    2. Wherever you run through a bulkhead or similar construction, make sure you use a suitable grommet to protect the cables.

    3. Fit a properly sized fuse at the battery end of the run to protect your wiring.

    4. Make sure that all crimped connections are tight (use proper crimp tools, not pliers) and ensure that you tighten down lug bolts etc. firmly.

    5. Don't waste your money on all the gold-plated battery terminals, silver-plated interconnect wires and so on which are sold by some places at vastly inflated prices.

With regards the power connections, it's better to come direct from the battery with a seperate fuse holder.

If the amp in going into the boot of the car connect the ground lead to the nearest seatbelt anchor bolt rather than going back to the battery, this will help avoid earth loops etc.

Be sure to use the same size cable for both power terminals a 10 or 16sq flexible should do it.

    2 other point's to consider:

    1. Make sure that the radio is powered from a switched supply, namely the ignition switch so that when the key is removed the radio is dead. Then..........

    2. Use the radio power antenna supply to power a relay on the amp power cable. This will ensure that you are only using the amp when the key is in the ignition. Otherwise your battery could drain verry quickly.
