Around the 3500 mark I'd say. Have a look in the autotrader - you'd probably get one from the north for buttons...

The car you are thinking of is the E36 3 series with the M40 engine (M43 if late '93).
When you are buying, make sure you have a mechanic with you. There are plenty of good examples out there but also plenty of duds.

Prices vary depending or where you buy it - dealer can come with warranty but is more expensive. Have a look at http://www.cbg.ie/search.asp?searchtype=used&sType=1&quick=Yes&Make=BMW&sMake=m7&sModel=21&ModelName=3%20Series&ModelIndex=2&sYearFrom=&sYearTo=&Max=20&OldSort=MAKE&Direction=&Sort=MAKE&ListPics=&Start=1 - prices there vary from €5 or 6k for a 1992 but they are not worth this much. Id agree with ChipZilla on price.

Have a look at the buying guide on www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw_e36.html and maybe even ask a few Qs on the forums @ www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk/forum or www.e36coupe.co.uk/forum.

Also with a BMW just becasue you can insure the thing, the running costs of them are another thing altogether. Make sure you can afford servicing and repairs. Learned that the hard way myself. Best of luck...

Bought my 93 e36 last December for 4K euro cash at a garage. In fairly good condition except a previous owner has cut the door panel's for speaker's which were not present.

Was quite sluggish at first and drank petrol. Did my own oil and Filters (oil, air and Fuel) change and fuel economy has improved dramitically.

Taking it to a main dealer in 2 week's to give it the once over( NCT in 6 month's).

Not a comfortable as I would have expected but then goes like hell once the rev's are kept ticking above 2000 rpm.

Overall happy with it and another year will be had before the change bug bits.

Best of luck and enjoy the experience.

see www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7391 for details of a BMW specialist in Cork or www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk/regions/irlnd/contacts.asp for ones outside.
When looking for my latest I brought Robert Harrison with me and we thoroughly examined a 655csi highline - good investment of €40 as it saved me buying a bit of a dud.
[edit] actually, now that I mention it, you may as well ask for assistance on the BMW Club forum - some of the lads there may tag along with you & help you out. [/edit]

The VRT goes by the book price down here, not what you paid for it up there...

Doesn't work like that. It's based on the value of the car here and also on the age of the car. The inspectors can easily be fooled though :)

    That's what I said.

How can the inspectors be easily fooled by a 316 though?:confused:

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 39,715 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

by making it look as crap as possible.
I know someone who broyught a car down, made it as filthy as possible and even put in old parts and it didn't really work.

So dirtying it up and making it look crap doesn't make a difference... The only way you might get a few quid off a valuation is if you have a model which was never sold here, and won't be on the inspectors list.

I might try and find one in Dublin so or the surrounding area save alot of hassle

Not the easiest thing but if you get one with a lot of options (M-pack, etc.) they mightened recognise this

Previous owner of my car that imported it from the UK didn't pay VRT over the Executive package (about €15k option here)
