    Hi all,

I have an account that has been closed a few years ago.

I received a statement last week on this account, I ve been charged on it.

After contacting AIB, it s "normal" :I should have cancelled the direct debit otherwise there s "nothing" they can do to prevent the transaction.

Should I have terminate this direct debit or am i right to think that it is a bit odd to be charged on an account that is closed ?

there is a world of difference between having a zero balance (0.00) in your account and having a closed account

DDs etc can be applied to the former but no transactions can be applied to a closed account

I'd wager your account was never closed at all - just lay there dormant with a nil balance

That is what I thought, and I got scared thinking that what I though was a closed account, as I requested, was in fact an account with a 0 balance.

However, AIB confirmed that my account is closed since 2001! And still, they also tell me that such a transaction is "normal" and can go through : I should have canceled the direct debit.

Here is what they wrote to me :

    "Dear xxx,
I have taken a look into this matter for you, and I hope I can address each
of your queries. I can confirm that your credit card account was closed on
    xx December 2001, "

    "
In relation to direct debits being applied to a closed credit card account.
Unfortunately as a direct debit of this nature is an agreement between you
and the company, we are unable to stop any transaction going through. You
would have to contact the company directly to cancel your agreement and to
    make alternative arrangements.

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

so it's a credit card - not an ordinary savings or current a/c

not sure but it does make a difference

the company should be chased for the money

you can always ask your Bank to claim under the Direct Debit Indemnity Scheme - but I think you need to prove that you cancelled the Direct Debit with the originator

they are right - Banks have no control over DDs - just standing orders

This happened to me years ago with an AIB cashsave account, I think what they are telling you is unfortunately correct. (They subsequently closed the account anyway).
