I'm looking for an email store that more than one user can access at the same time.
It does not have to do contacts/calenders etc.

There seem to be a lot of third party apps to allow more than one use to access a .PST file at a time (cf. http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm )
    - has anyone used of them ?
    - are any gnu/free ?
    Do they work ?

Bah, I've had to repair PSTs that piece of s**t software like Public Outlook corrupted. PSTs aren't designed to be shared. That's what public folders are for...

There's a reason why they're called Personal Folders. Public folders should be used for sharing mails - you can set permissions on them to only allow certain people access.

Each instance of Outlook uses exclusive locks on PSTs - so 2 instances can't access a PST at the same time.

Good news: MsMail can be setup so uses can share folders (just make bloody sure you untick the delivery options)
it's in add/remove services in a full install of 2000
    and for XP/2003 http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/msmail_xp.htm

Bad news: can't search or sort MsMail folders and they seem to loose the "to" colum (it appears in the emails when you open them)

(can't use Exchange Public folders - size & bandwidth limits)

So looks like will have to use LDAP - can you have Exchange and LDAP folders in Outlook 2000 at the same time ??
