    good morning folks,

i just have a quick question that i am hoping someone will have an answer to.

i am looking to buy a poker table top, that will seat 6-9 people, i just want one that i can leave against the wall and take it out and plonk it on top of the kitchen table when we are playing.

i would like one with a cushioned ring, drink holders and chip holders are not essential but would be a nicety!

i am wondering does anyone know of anywhere in ireland (north or south) that has these? or if not, does anyone have one? where did they get it, what was the cost and how did they get it here?

    thanks for you time,

    daveh

I have a few velvet cloths, they work pretty well I think. You can wash them and all too, pretty handy for home games. Allot cheaper than what your talking about, I'd say if you did have one with chip/drink holders, they would never be used. I doubt people would both stacking their chips in the holders, especially if they didn't even accomodate their whole chip amount. Maybe ask the fitzwilliam or Merrion casino where they got theirs. the cusions are nice alright:)

i have 2 cloths at home, but the issue is that i use my old tech drawing clips to bolt it to the table and i keep losing them and its pissing me off!

i agree that the chip holders may not be used, but i dont really mind either way!

i will ask in the merion / fitzwilliam where they got theres and also do htey have any old ones they are getting rid of.

thanks for the reply, and if anyone else has anything else to contribute that'd be great.

    cheersd

I think the ones in the fitz/merrion are too expensive for the likes of us, they have cash boxes fitted underneath and everything.
I'm sure if you google for it, and search through the various poker equipment sites you'll be able to source what you're looking for online. I haven't heard of anywhere in Ireland that would have poker tables to buy.

Mr Pudding is building his own I think. Big sheet of wood, padding/foam to cushion the tbale top, some top quality felt/woolcloth stuff. Gerire would know all about that sort of thing.

Mightn't be of any use to you but if you fancy BUILDING your own table, go to
    www.goallin.com
    Go into Forum.
    Click on Poker questions
3rd down "Building a Basic Poker.."
American so it mightn't work but it gives you an idea.

i have googled it and found what i am after, but they are all in the UK and shipping that kinda thing would cost an arm and leg!

Making one would be pretty easy. I'm an apprentise carpenter (ooooooh) hehe, All you'd need to do would be get a piece of mdf (or something lighter, chipboard maybe) get some foamy stuff and get some of the proper velvet/felt they use, tac it all together, glue etc. See how it goes and then put on the cushion (wouldn't be too sure where to get a good one.

your issue should be why spend that much on a poker table in the first place, let alone the shipping costs? It's ridiculous isn't it? don't mind me, wasn't seriously suggesting it - I just like posting links

haha! they actually do date back to 20 AD Jesus used them in a coffee shop. Some people would try anything! Some guy was selling 20 million play chips for some online poker room. Someone bidded around $400 for them!!!! haha.

Best bet is to ask the fitz, I'm sure they have a source in Ireland or at least the UK for them!

Well, in that case, www.play.com sells a Texas Hold'em poker starter kit for 18 quid sterling, which includes:

    *Easy to learn instructions
*200 professional weight and quality clay poker chips
    *Dealer button
    *Felt playing surface
    *Poker chip rack
    *1 deck of poker cards

It's worth 18 quid just for the 200 professional  weight and quality poker chips! Free delivery too!

    Link Here.

I have this set, saw it in Barnes & Noble in the US for 20 bucks...the chips are OK but not clay. Ok for a home game. About 5g weight plastic injection moulded. Wouldn't pay 18 quid for it. The felt is useless (crap and way too small). Cards are worth 50c tops. Dealer button is OK but same size as chips.

Nice one MadsL, good to know.

I work with a guy that has his own workshop and reckons he'll be able to build me a poker table very easily, leather trims and felt included of course.

This has started me wondering though......
.....do I really want chip slots and drinks holders.
Surely the chip slots will be overflowing quite quickly due to my legendary skills.
On top of that, if I have drinks holders on my tables I see one of two outcomes happening...... either someone spills beer all over the table when reaching for cards or chips (brain mincer) or I spend the entire evening worrying that someone is gonna spill beer all over the table.
But then you gotta wonder, if I don't have drinks holders or chip slots, then is there any real difference between this and a normal table (apart from the felt top).

Anyone out there got a decent table that can tell me what they find are the pro's and cons.
Or anyone even got some oppinions that may help me.

    Nice one.

I don't like the chips slots, much prefer to have a stack, regardless of how big it is, in front of me. Drinks holders are practical, yes, but even when I play at home I don't allow drinks or ashtrays on the table itself. I think everyone's better off when you use little side tables instead.

Yeah this is what I thought.
But then is there any real point in having the table.
What is the advantage over say an 8'x4' pine kitchen table?
Sorry I trying desperately to sway my descision as to whether to bother with one or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,886 ✭✭✭Marq

I personally don't think there's any point unless you're going the whole hog and paying two grand for one of these (grand for the table and a grand for the shipping. I just throw some green material over my dining room table and it works just fine.

    Thanks Marq.

Good to have someone to bounce ideas off.
Think I'll leave the table for the foreseable future.
