Just read this article - http://www.radiowaves.fm/newspapers/Phantom/IrishExaminer_02July04.shtml

and indeed you have a very strong team in My opinion cant see why you should not get a licence this time around but one never knows. Looking foward to when you get the licence its going to be increadbile with a team like that. The thing I liked the best (Not living in Ireland) was been able to see the band live on the web been interviewed and playing live in the studio. So in a way I could say I saw the band play live (in studio).

    Best of luck

    Good Luck

but i'm sure you know that nobody who has ever broadcast as a pirate station has ever been granted a licence in this country lets hope you break the cycle. When you go hundred percent legal can you start doing nights in Whelans again as it is gone to ****e whats with all the ska for Gods sake.

tanked, q102 is an ex-pirate station, and all the top men and women in most Irish stations are coming from pirate radio in the 70's and 80's, so I dont see why they would discriminate on that basis. Phantom have made huge attempts at going legit, and their temp licences and online only broadcasts have shown that they are commited to being a real station.

Best of luck to you all, on a positive note, the Indo had a piece on the new licences, and it mentioned that as most new stations are still in the red, a low cost base would be the only way to go for any successful bidders.... so thats you all over!! the BCI will want to let a station in that can afford to keep running under its remit, and not sell off, if they see phantom has a low cost base, with alot of advertising interest and backing, it should be an easy choice.

Its a toss between the "fake" xfm :) and Phantom in September. The other line ups look iffy. I'm betting Phantom will clinch it...best of luck lads..if not for the music ;) but for the sheer effort over the years.
ps:why did Pete and Ger Roe have to dress up like busmen on the ghostbus too???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭BrianD

As part of our low cost base business model we got Ger and Simon to drive the bus (in shifts) as a cost saving measure!

    LOL, class!

Thats some pretty fine backers, Brian.... what you were lacking the last time around. Now with the temp licences and the feedback given from that.... Oooh fingers crossed. :)

I've been a fan of Phantom's for years now and as much as I'd really like to see them get the licence I am a bit uneasy with the idea of MCD owning it. They would seem to have an unhealthy monopoly in the Dublin music scene as it is. I have heard stories of them putting pressure on record companies to move artists from non mVD ownded venues to MCD venues based on them hosting a larger label mate act. What;s to stop them not allowing music by bands who are doing Aikens gig say? I don't believe that the management of phantom would envolve themselves n such dubious acts, but business is business and mCD have a large powerful monopoly in the market place.

I wouldn;t be surprised if the BCI took this into consideration

May I take this opportunity to clarify that MCD does not have a stake or ownership in Phantom FM.

You can view our application online at the BCI website. The application contains all you need to know (and more!) about the shareholdings in the station.

Denis Desmond/Gaiety Investments is the same as MCD. The fact that the two are different entities in name shouldn't affect the reality that the people who control MCD will have a stake in phantom when it gets the license.

    Hello there,

Its the "same" yes? Glad you are so good with your corporate and shareholding knowldedge. The people who "control" one successful media and entertainment business are going to have a stake in another succesful media business. The problem there is what precisely?

it's only natural that the main promoters of alternative music would have a serious interest in getting into radio that'd be able to promote their product. It was just that when BrianD was suggesting that he "take this opportunity to clarify that MCD does not have a stake or ownership in Phantom FM." I thought it was worth pointing out that on any rational basis, it would be fair to assume that while MCD in name does not have a stake in Phantom FM, the fact that it's proprietor does, means that the suggestion is slightly disingenuous at best, that's all.

Thats in My opinion good they are 2 of a kind Denis promotes Alternitive music just like Phantom he has many connections that will help Phantomfm what i think Brian was getting at was that he probaly personally has a stake in phantom and MCD the company he owns does not or has not fronted any money to the project. It is like saying I own a telephone company and a car company ..its doent mean the car company has a stake in the telephonre company.

I dont think its disingenuous at all. The initial statement (not from you) was that MCD "owned" Phantom. This came after another poster had stated (in another thread) that Clear Channel in the US also "owned" Phantom. Those statements are disengenuous.

Anyway, back on track. Roll on next Monday and the presentations. 2.30pm in the Conrad Hotel on Earlsfort Terrace for those interested. Thanks to all those for postings, emails and texts of support in the last little while, much appreciated.

it might not have been disingenuous on purpose, but it would make people think that MCD have nothing to do with Phantom's bid. The fact of the matter is that the person who owns MCD does therefore, unless it's being done in an altruistic manner (always possible I suppose), MCD in effect do. I'm just confused as to why Brian would be trying to muddy the water with those kind of statements?

  • Registered Users Posts: 866 ✭✭✭Rockiemalt

whoever gets the licence must stick to what they say in the licence application and I'm sure the BCI or ComReg would not be impressed if after phantom getting the licence they started only palying upcoming mcd acts or adding all mcd people to the a list.

apart from that I could never imagine in my wildest dreams phantom doing that, its not what they seem to be about!

    disingenuous......... altruistic ....
mommy why is he using big silly words?
