Sorry if this is a stupid question, but it's got me stumped.
I have 6 workbooks open in excel, which is giving me six excel tabs in the taskbar. How can I change it to only have 1 excel tab and then change workbook within that (alt+W)?

    Oops, found it now.
Tools, Options, View Tab. Uncheck "Windows in Taskbar"

how can something so easy take so long to sort out??

This is absolutely not a dumb question kin9pin

Click Tools, Options, View tab and go for "Windows In Taskbar". Uncheck the box.

Works in Excel 2002, can't guarantee it's there with 2000 if you're using that.

They like to hide these things...

edit: Ah, I see you've found it yourself:)
