What's the best way to accurately measure my broadband speed ... just got iol broadband and seems to be way slow!

Is there a set test and benchmark for 512 kbps?

if you are using Mozilla, there is an extension for it called "bandwidth tester" it's pretty accurate!

Just got the free IOL trial today and ran this test. Is 381 kbit decent? Download speeds of ~54 kb/sec.

54 is very nice on 51.2 speed!

if you use mozilla firefox, download an extension called bandwidth tester! it gives you more real numbers! is very nice extension!
