Fulham's return to Craven Cottage was marred by a substitution row which led to their game with Watford being abandoned at half-time.

Referee Peter Walton walked out rather than contravene new Fifa rules, which limits the number of replacements.

Both sides had used six permitted subs and opted to officially abandon the game, although it continued as an exhibition with a linesman refereeing.

By the end of the match, 40 substitutes had been used by the two teams.

Fulham secretary Lee Hoos slammed the Fifa regulations, which were introduced following complaints about the large number of substitutions used in internationals.

"I think the rule is absolutely ludicrous," he said.

"It is imposing a significant health and safety risk on players who have been back in training for one week to have to play 90 minutes."

Watford manager Ray Lewington agreed, saying: "There has to be common sense really. To ask players to play 90 minutes so early is ridiculous."

they're giving out about the fifa rule making the players play for 90 mins, so why are they playing the match so early then. Plus its not like the rule was introduced in the middle of the match, they knew about it beforehand.

Fulham have friendlies against Rangers and Celtic coming up, these games should draw decent crowds and the police wanted to do a test run with the changed stadium using a smaller crowd. Chris Coleman said they didn’t want to play so early but it was the only way to get clearance.

Also the six subs rule is a joke, I understand why it was brought in for international games, but it is unnecessary for club football.

40 subs is justa joke tho. 11 would be reasonable enough. That way the most a player would play is 45mins. They dont even have to play out of their skins effort wise. Sheesh.

By the two teams each, or combined?

Even if it is each, how on earth did each team use 20 substitutes each. It must have been some farce.

They must have had the Reserves playing as well .

anyway the FA complained to FIFA about the 6 player substitusion rule , and it has been rescinded by FIFA , so it looks like Fulham talking a stand has paid off .

this is all sven goran erikssons fault, he started all this using 3 teams in each game nonsense. It wasnt an issue before.
