Ok, i have just contacted Eircom to see about transferring from their DSL service to Digiwebs. Should be interesting to see what a shambles they will turn this simple process into. I'll keep you all posted. BTW, im under contract and wish to buy it out before changing so that should also be interesting.

    Later,

Ok, its 3 hours since i emailed the "BROADBAND TECHNICAL SUPPORT" section at Eircom, and i receive this very informative reply giving my options. Wait for it.....

    "Dear wellyj@gmail.com,

Thank you for your e-mail to Broadband support.
Please call our sales dept on 1800 503 303 regarding your query re cancelling broadband.

    Kind Regards,

Well that was worth the wait!! I guess i'll have to call em so and see if the people on the phones are more helpful than the informative automated email reply machine.

    Ok, where to start.
Calling the number quoted in the email, perhaps unsurprisingly, led to some guy who must have been hired 10 minutes prior to the call. He didnt seem to know anything whatsoever about BB cancellations but he did however forward me to a number which repeatedly ended with an answering machine.

Hmmm.... Typical Eircom i thought, so i decided to ring the original number again in the hope of getting through to someone not so incompetent. I got through to a guy named Brian who was in fact very helpful and, despite trying to find out why on earth!! i would want to change from eircom to a rival service and try to convince me to avail of one of the better packages, was able to fulfil the request.

So now apparently the connection will be cancelled within 5 "working" days. This, i'm sure, means a month or so with Eircom but we will wait and see. The cancellation fee was 150 euro due to the contract being voided but with Digiwebs free webcam and 200 euro accredited to the account on setup i dont particularly care.

Anyway, i must say if it is cancelled within the quoted time than i was actually impressed with the customer service apart of course from the expected wild goose chase to get a representative that actually knows whats going on. But i guess thats to be expected when dealing with Eircom.

Ill let you know how the changeover goes from here.

I just got Digiweb last Friday; well the line was connected but it was late when I got home and so I didn't get my account activated until yesterday. 20GB cap, static IP and sub 100 pings on Day of Defeat servers. Admittedly it's only just up so I don't know about reliability, but downloads appear to be solid 52K/sec.

I haven't tried the Zyxel modem as I am using a D-Link DSL Wireless router which is excellent also (literally always connected so I can use wireless to my laptop without bootiing desktop)

    Everything is excellent, AFAIK!!!

Now to drop Slackware and get Gentoo............

Sounds cool, i got the BizJet Enhanced package so its 1mb/s so hopefully i will get 100kb/s at least. Plus no limits with that package either :) Cant wait

I've had Digiweb homejet for a few months now. Some initial problems with Eircom activating my line but once that was sorted everything's been great. Using the supplied Zyxel modem with a Belkin wireless router for my laptop and PDA. Found Digiweb staff very good - no going on hold and easy to get to speak to the same (knowledgeable) person. All in all I'm glad that I gave a small ISP my business instead of some faceless corporation.

Yeah I second that about digiweb. I initially was going with Esat/IOL until after 2 weeks I called and they "lost" the application (having sent me 2 emails confirming the order).

SO while I was hesitant with Digiweb as there was very little reviews on boards.ie of the service, it was setup in 10 days as they said and the staff is actually very good. Also the fact that Esat had previously kicked me off of NoLimits as I was one of the lucky 2000 who were overusing the service which had no usage limits did affect my choice somewhat ;)

Yeh i have noticed the fact that when you call you are dealt with very quickly and efficiently, no being sent around in circles and holding etc. If the product does what it says it does i will be very happy. Just glad to be free from Eircon's iron grip.

WellyJ, I know you have to pay a cancellation fee when breaking your contract early, but don't you also have to pay for the remainder of your contract?

Doesn't really say much as it's not in game with 30 other players and so on. On Battelfield I usually play around 60-70ms pings with 32 players maps in UK or DE.

I'll second that re DigiWeb - we've had their Bizjet service here for bout a month and a half now, very happy - it was set up very promptly (ordered Monday, all up going by that Friday evening, including modem delivery and all). Speed is good (it's a 1mbit line, get 100k/s download consistently). Reliability has been excellent. Haven't tried much gaming yet, pings on Quake3 servers seemed to be around 80, we're running a fairly fancy firewall/router setup though, should be able to optimise that some more.

Very happy with them, would definetely reccomend DigiWeb to all and sundry.

    Oh yeah, pinging jolt:
