Yeah - really good game. Totally addictive.
Ta Cloud for getting a server up !

About the target spotting for mortars - I'm sure this could be really effective if ppl did it in a decent manner. Have a think about the following :
Bear in mind that it'll take the average sniper at least 2 seconds to locate and take out a target.

Mortar guy stays on back facing slope of nearby hill.
Targetter gets out of cover for around 1 second and iluminates the target for a fraction of a second before diving back into cover and changing position. This'd be enough time for the mortar guy to get the general area of the targetting triangle.

The targetter would then get back out of cover and illuminate for another 2 seconds. Even if the sniper took 'em out after that, it should still be enough time for the mortar guy to get a decent lock on the targetting triangle (given that they knew the general area of it from the last time).

Thye problem seems to be with the uncoordinated way we're doing it at the moment - e.g targetter trying to light it up once for a long period of time rather than targetter lighting up twice for smaller periods of time.

Just my 2 cents (euros ?) worth ...

Oh my god! Tribes is soooo cool!
A few questions from you experienced lads (coz I'm still a muppet at this game .

1. Turrets and stuff.
I was blazing away at a turret for yonks and it wasn't taking any damage!? Why? This is because of shields or something right? Are the shields invulnerable to certain weapons? I noticed that taking out the enemy generator makes stuff easy to kill, coz they lose all their shields. The ELF gun knocks out shields quickly? I tought it was called an ELF gun coz it did **** all damage and it automatically hits the target, thereby making it perfect for HPB Elves lol!

2. Mortary bits.
Right. What's the ****ing story with these things? One lad paints the target, fair enough, I can do that. So when you're the Heavy with the mortar you see the target illuminated in the distance. So do you just have to judge the angle? Or is there some kind of autoaiming thingybob what does it for you?

I was on Clouds server at the weekend but noone else was on! We get a cool ping to it, and I haven't had a game yet where my ping was less than 300 ! This will change

Hey man.

1. Turrets. All weapons can harm them, the problem is that their shields regenerate at an incredible rate. When using something like a disker, by the time you've reloaded and shot a second time, their shields are back to full! The answer is to use something incredibly destructive (mortar), OR knock out the generators so their shields go down (making them ****-easy to kill) OR using an ELF gun on them at close range to drain their shields followed up by blaster fire OR use a blaster continuously - the blaster's high rate of fire means that the shields are gradually beaten back until they're gone, then the turret goes down. Remember, until the shields are downed, the turret doesn't take *any* damage.

2. Mortars. When someone spots a target for you, watch for a vertical line in the sky above the target with two blue triangles. Aim at the point of either triangle and you'll hit the target. The higher triangle is used for a higher trajectory shot, to make your location more difficult to determine, the lower triangle is a straighter shot, but the enemy will be able to guess where you are more easily.

Seeya online tonight..

Cloud - your server is ace! How long is it going to be up? I understand that college bandwidth is rarely used for things like this for long.

Anyways, I propose that Cloud's server becomes our 'official' server for now. Myself, Dupre and Fiend are mad into this game, and get good connects. If any of ye want to get the Irish Tribe going, lets get together on this server and start pounding away at each other.

A few things I've found useful:

1. Packs. Unless you're a sniper, or carrying an inventory station, carry a repair pack - they're sodding VITAL. Ignore the ammo pack, if your heavies need more mortar shells, bring an ammo/inv station along. You can get more ammo by running over the corpses of your enemies. I'd rarely use the shield pack, unless you're a defending heavy - and even then a repair pack allows you to stay out longer when under fire. Jammers can be handy, but I rarely find a need for them - better to destory the enemy's sensors than protect yourself against them.

2. Weapons. Always carry a blaster, two people with blasters can take out pretty much all of the turrets/sensors of an enemy base. If you see someone firing away at an enemy turret, join in and it will go down quickly, just watch for snipers. Always carry a disker, they're the most effective way of defending yourself. Always carry a targetting laser, you never know when it may come in handy. Ditto for grenades, beacons and mines.

If you're attacking enemy installations, bring along an ELF gun. Run up to a turret/sensor dodging it's fire, and fire the ELF at it for a few seconds. Now switch to blaster - the turret will have no shields left and will go down in a matter of seconds.

A peltast with blaster and ELF gun can take out defenses more quickly than a mortar/spotter team, if given covering fire.
Spotters *will* get a laser in the head if the other team are any way decent.

3. Simple stuff. At the start of most games, one member of the team should go heavy and lay down turrets at vital places in the base. Turret placement is an art-form - they must be placed very carefully, so they surprise people, so they are difficult to destroy from safety, and so they do not interfere with each other. If you lay mines, tell people where they are! Be very careful placing turrets outside, they're easily destroyed by long range fire.

Don't use your jet pack if you're near an enemy installation equipped with a missile turret - there is *no* faster way to get your ass kicked. The large plasma batteries 'lead' you with their fire, change direction a lot.

If you're sniping, pay close attention to the sensor reading at the top of the screen - if it glows red, then everyone on the other team sees a nice big red triangle over your head, and can see you on their map. If you're not in sensor range, then you're just a black dot on the landscape - a perfect sniper.

So, take out the enemy sensors, then snipe at anyone trying to repair them more easily.

Right, enough from me. must... work...
