I will be moving to London in the not too distant future and will spend a good part of each day in the car .... I would like to minimize it as much as possible and so a PDA that will tell me how to get to a particular destination and update itself dynamically when I go off route would be ideal ..... do such things exist and if they do how much do they cost? .....

Where is a good place to buy the stuff ? ...

The one on the left is excellent value if memory serves. Can't speak to the quality of the systems though. It is Michelin branded though, so probably fairly alright.

You could probably get a dedicated GPS unit for way less than €734. Do a few searches for the Garmin Street Pilot III. It would offer a lot more functionality than any PDA could. You should be able to pick one up for less than €600.

there was a pretty in-depth review of various Bluetooth GPS solutions (that can link with a PDA) mentioned previously in this thread

this UK site that specialise in GPS solutions may also be worth checking out

I have a Medion PDA running Pocket PC 2003 which came with a GPS receiver and software.

Its the business. Only thing against it, or any software for that matter, is the lack of detail for Ireland, but this is a common thing with all software suppliers.

I used it recently in the UK all around North wales and Manchester and I flew around like I had been driving there all my life even though it was my first visit in a car!!

If you'd like any more details, or even like to see the system operate, just let me know and I'll try and help.

Thanks for the offer wolfman ...... quick question for ya though ... how much were they when you bought it (Lidl? or Aldi?) ....

There is a shit load of 'bundles' available on ebay, I'm considering all options, I havent ruled out the all-in-one jobbies yet - but at least the prices I'm seeing for the ones made from a receiver and PDA with software are becoming a lot more reasonable ....

It was 499 all in, which is a fantastic price for the spec........

It came with the GPS receiver and the GPS software and 2 256MB multimedia cards plus other software, car leads, car holder, docking station, active sync, microsoft outlook, carrying case, stereo headphones etc............. and the unit itself is a very good spec with a 400 Mhz processor and 64MB ram...WITHOUT using the SD/MMC slot!

Had a look around for you and found a great review of the actual system here

In actual fact, I was in Aldi in Carlow recently and although the offer was run last October, they still had them available there, with one in a display case, but a sign saying to ask for details, which I did, and I'm almost sure it is still the same price!!
