ok, you're going to get space on a college server for a warez site? stop being a complete and utter ar$ehole. if anyone *really* wants it they can order it from the states or run up a phone bill dl'ing it somewhere. either way its going to cost them and tbh having a manual is almost essential.

i got it warez last week, downloaded it from somewhere, "evaluated it", and have ordered a proper copy of it today from the states.

WTF?! erm butcher man not everyone has the guys of 40 quid or whatever to spend on a game and I think there is nothing with warez. If you want to have a debate against piracy I'm all for it. One thing I will say though that MOST of the people who have the game now got it on warez. Mainly becuase they are on big phat collage connections. The reason I was going to mirror it on a irish site. Was becuase that the people who are on modems have half a chance of "evualating" this game <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/tongue.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":P">

There is something wrong with warez. By warez'ing it you're stealing from the guys who wrote it. They go bust, no more games from them, no more support, patches etc.

And who would be stupid enough to use space on a college server for warez. Some people are concerned with legalities mate.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 Anzariba

    warez.....

    think about it

There is a school of thought that some of theses "modern thinking" marketing departments actual bank on the game/software being warez.

Cos that will mean that more and more people will play it/use it

and those who can afford to will buy the full licensed version cos they want it but those who couldnt afford it play it play it making more of a community

therefore - more sales of game than would have happened, more of a community and more exposure - when the ppl who couldnt afford to buy games get older(assuming they are students) and have jobs(big assumption) they will be more liekly to buy games...

I guess tribes will have a patch in say ... 3 months once the community is large enough that only registered editions can use or something similar..,.

Anzariba dont that this the wrong way, but your talking though your arrse. If you cannt afford the software tough, you dont have a right to it. Its no different than someone taking your car, and saying I'd have paid for it if I could afford it.
You can justify it anyway you want, its still stealling, and as someone who works in the shrink wrapped software industry, warez impact on me and my job.

I agree with Rev on this one. The whole point the games are so expensive is not that there is so much piracy. If anything you are making other people pay more and putting the company out of business. Granted they may not lower thier prices if everyone paid for it, but it would slow down the price hikes and actually help them build a better game.

Why don't you's just shoplift the game? It's the same thing. And don't give me this "I want to try it crap" cause 90% of those people don't bother paying for the game yet will whine "I want this fixed".

Oh yea, If you don't fully read the manual for Tribes and read how to play it, you only p1ss off others in the game and are likely to get kicked quicker.

Lastly there will be no 3 month patch. For starters you don't even need the CD to play. Tribes was kind of experimental and I think they knew the warez culture would be all over it, so they are using it to boost tribes2.

And Chrome, ffs you can at least respect Cloud by not posting your Warez notifactions to the board.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,264 ✭✭✭✭Hobbes

Oh yea the price of the game here varys from...

$29.99 (so I've been told) to 39.99 (how much it is local) That's pretty cheap. Don't know what your going to be paying in Ireland. Oh and I'm back in 2 weeks for a week, so if someone wants a copy let me know and I'll pick it up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,346 ✭✭✭Rev Hellfire

I got my copy of it for $29.99 in Compusa, which seems to be the cheapest you'll get it, and its availble there online as well.

Erm hobbes few holes in your argument. I think I have a bit more insight into this subject then anyone else (dont mean to sound big headed but read on!). I have a good friend of mine who works in a game company (not going to say which and its not some net aquatiance where he answers my mails). Anyway he says that the game companys dont really mind people pirtating at this scale (they expect it!). What they do object to is people putting it on a warez cd and flogging it off for 20 quid. About putting companys out of buisness sorry but l ****ing o l. Anyway know what kind a car John Carmack drives (thats right a ferrari f40). Look in the parking lot of any of the game companys and you will see similar sights. Now i expect someone to retort with "what about the smaller companies". There are no longer any small game companys for the simple reason that they wouldnt last a month in this rapid changing industry. So dont try and do a guilt trip on people warezing. And its not the same as shop lifting (doing it this way you will not be caught!)
    About the manual and stuff.
1 the offline training missions are there becuase they know very few % of people who buy the game wont bother to look at the manual

    2. sites like www.planetst****ige.com have online sections that are better then any documentation

about respecting cloud I have to utmost respect for him. But get off my back and start *****ing at arab boy and venom and etc etc for actually SELLING cd's over the board

/me watch's hobbes arguments hpc go down in flames

Hey muppet boy, you may have a friend in the S/W industry but I work in it, as does those most of the people who disagree with you.

Your friend has obviously never worked his a$$ off for months on a program only to find that when trying to sell it everyone has a copy already and is refusing to pay.

There are no longer smaller companies as the money they need to run the business is being sucked out by muppets posting free software and others not paying for the software. Look warez is borderline, while I don't like it, I don't overly mind people people who try the software (my opinions do not reflect those of my company<IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">), then if they don't like it remove it from their system or buy the product. But you Chrome, you obviously like this game but your unwilling to help support the guys who spent years programming it. A little bit hypocritical that.

And it is the same as shoplifting assuming your a good shoplifter.

"There are no longer any small game companys for the simple reason that they wouldnt last a month in this rapid changing industry" - Actually Dynamix is a small game company. And before you start screaming serria that's the publisher.

"1 the offline training missions are there becuase they know very few % of people who buy the game wont bother to look at the manual"

    - Actually no there not. They are compliment the manual. If you read the manual you would know this. One cool thing about the manual <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> It lists the developers and thier nicks, and it was fun to watch the warez heads whinging for features on the boards when they clearly had no idea who they were talking to (I've had the game since December, I'm up with a lot more of the gossip <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/tongue.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":P">).

Anyhow Dynamix released an online manual in January. I guess to help stop the warez heads ruining the game.

"2. sites like www.planetst****ige.com have online sections that are better then any documentation"

    - it's siege, not seige. Actually PlanetStarSiege ripped off thier user manual from the Dynamix site. so <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/tongue.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":P">'''

Chrome if you think it's OK why don't you just post the game to your wargrounds server.

One last thing... if the games companies expect people to Warez it and think that's OK why do they put aside a portion of thier budget in putting in software protection? Maybe feeling sorry for the hackers they would nowt to do huh?

But keep on warezing Chrome, with all the money you save you might actually be able to buy a clue.

    Lads

I'm going to be reciving a zip disk with tribes on it today. As I see all these people crying out for the game (and actually going and spending money on it). Buy software what a new idea <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/tongue.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":P"> hehe anyway If one of the collage heads like in UL or TCD will give me space I'll mirror it there so nice fast irish site to warez it from

just an idea and yeah yeah I know no ilegal **** on the board but you guys want it ...... go on you know you do <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

I must say I back Hobbes on this one to the full. I also work in the software industry, and we've had our products placed on warez sites, an act we take as piracy. I have no problem with someone having PURCHASED the software and maybe burning a copy or three to give to there mates, again this is my own opinion not that of the company accountants. Warez is different losing one or two sales is totally different than losing 100+.

I'm sick to death of stupid 'arguments' like look at so-and-so he's got a flash car or some other wannk. They've got their flash cars and stuff because they worked for them, something which is going to come as a bit of a shock to you thicks when you leave college.

You can justify any which way you want, but in the end of the day your just theiving scum.

    fin.

I know this is a old thread but I just want to defend myself. Muppet the reason that I got so frustrated with the thread was the simple reason that it wasnt a debate it was a mud throwing contest.

Man, are you *that* desperate for the last word on this?

IMHO, the issue is more complicated than either yours or Hobbes' take on this (yes I work in software development, and would be most unimpressed if I witnessed piracy of our software - however, this is due more to the nature of the software than anything else).

I believe that the issue of piracy of high-cost commerical software and low-cost software such as games should be looked at separately.

Games. They are inexpensive. However, they're not useful in any sort of a commercial sense. They are entertainment, and their target audience can rarely afford to purchase many of them. These 3 factors make game piracy more popular. They're not worth much, are only entertaining for a short period of time, and there are so many of them out there, so whats the problem with getting free copies of them if possible?

I believe this is the wrong attitude. The games are inexpensive, so people should be able to buy a few of the best games quite easily. Most games may only be good for a week or so of evening sessions before being completed - but what of the new generation of multiplayer games, which still entertain people YEARS after purchase? It is not morally defensible to pirate a game that gives you hundreds of hours of entertainment, spread over years, especially when the software can be bought for 30 quid.

Commercial software. I believe this should be talked about separately. I have used Adobe Photoshop for years. It is an amazing package, and I've spent lots of time using it to produce graphics for my homepage. At no time have I ever had sufficient funds to purchase a copy of it. Even more importantly - I've never had an opportunity to make money from using it. My choice was clear - either I pirate it, or not use it. Neither option affects Adobe directly. They're not 'losing' money on the deal. In fact, I argue that they gained - they gained one more experienced Photoshop user and advocate. If anyone asks me about image manipulation software, I tell them about Photoshop. I was asked in work about getting software for redesigning our website - and guess what - brand new copies of Photoshop and Illustrator now sit on a shelf in the office. I don't believe that the 15 year old enthusiast with his/her pirate copy of 3DS is doing anything wrong. With luck, in a few years he/she will be a graphics professional with 3DS on his/her CV, fueling the demand for more purchases of the software by companies they are employed by.

The only software piracy I am completely and un-reservedly against is when large companies use software for profit but do not pay for it - and guess which form of piracy the software licensing people go after the most?

    Teeth.
