That'll do, a wee bit more memory would be a help...

But I've got it running fine on that spec

i'm running it on a p233mmx with 40M Ram & a voodoo2. runs class as long as there's no more than 25 or so players in the game. had some slowdown in a 32 player game i was in on saturday nite

I'm running an AMD K6-2 300 with a V2, and in big games my framerate starts to drop to around 20, which ain't nice at all. That said, if they'd bothered doing a 3D-Now version I'd be grand. Go for the celeron, and OC the **** out of it.

Hmm... must upgrade.. a K6-3? A K7? A Celery? A P2/3? Hmmm....

Currently my specs for a new machine are:

Processor:

Dunno. Either a K7, an overclocked celeron, or a high-end P2/3.

Memory:

128MB of uber low-latency SDRAM. (Nice Mushkin stuff, you never know when you might want to run a 133Mhz bus)

Disks:

Twin 13GB 10Krpm IBM Deskstars, running stiped ultra fast/wide SCSI 2. ) I'll need driver coolers and an extra power supply though. Haven't decided on a SCSI adapter. Adaptec are always a good bet I suppose.

Removable Media:

Interal Zip Drive, SCSI CD RW, SCSI CD, Floppy (duh).

Video:

A Voodoo3 please guv, the 4000.

Sound:

Sound Blaster Live, full version (mmmm digital out).

Network:

A good sturdy 3Com, nothing better for over-clocking.

Modem:

My current Zoom 56Kflex is grand I reckon.

Case:

I've no idea. Something really nice looking, with at least 5 full-height bays, 4 half-height bays, 2 power supplies, 8 slots, and 3 fans at least. And Black. Oh yes.

Monitor:

A nice 19inch Trinitron, .24dp, an Iiyama 450 Pro perhaps. Something with a USB hub anyays.

Speakers:

Not sure, I quite like the Boston Acoustics that come with high-end Gateways. Something with a good sub-woofer and 4 speakers for good A3D vibes.

Mouse/Keyboard:

Retail MS Intellimouse Pro, USB with a nice mousemat (those 3M ones are good?). Dunno about the keyboard though. A nice USB one anyways.

Hmm.. I'll stop drooling now.

Teeth.

Hey just one note about usb it sucks Hehe no seriously though its a cpu hog. It might sound really cool on paper but research the usb stuff you are going to buy as it could slow down the system

Just my thoughts on the subject

ChR Cat Deeley.... yummy oMe

You're running DIMMs in a p200? Hmm, didn't know they bothered using anything but SIMMs in those. Buy a single 128MB PC100 DIMM from www.scan.co.uk or another one of the UK mail-order places. Use it in your current machine, and then use it in your next machine.

You're right there, about USB. But hey, I'm a Mac user of yore, I long for the simplicity of ADB . I may end up going USB, for good support for my Linux/BeOS installs if nothing else.

"may end up NOT going USB..", even.

Sigh.

An 8800gt will run Quake 2 in ULTRA BROWN mode, at about 20fps if you're lucky... I would splash out for 2 8800 ultras if I were you.....

Nice Bump! :p

Moore's Law isn't that funny, is it?
I used to play quake 2 on a amd k6 300mhz 32mb ram and a 16mb voodoo banshee.

it is actually... I find it funny because I know, 8 years from now, i'm going to be looking back at the uber specced out machine I had and laughing at the now threads about games like crysis and what kind of power was needed to play them. How fast technology gets old, I have a box of 128MB RAM sticks in work just gathering dust, and a 800Mhz P4 Gateway machine running as a glorified DSL modem.

Although Moores law really isn't relevant anymore, the moment Intel decided to go multicore was the moment they admitted defeat to moores law.

In 1990 computers had what? 2mb of RAM? 17 years later we have an average of 2048mb ram, a 1024 fold increase......

So in 2024 we will all be sporting 2097152mb or 2 terabytes or ram? :D

Oh Retr0gamer - ha! I remember this exactly!

T'was summer 1996. My 1 Yr old IR£3,000 Dell P120 16Mb, 1Gb Harddrive, 4Mb Trio32 video was sh*t hot (so I thought) and I installed Quake 1.06. Next, 320x200 - hmm ok 24-30fps. Right now for 640x480.... 11 fps! Lovely graphics. Might as well put up with it I thought. Played most of the 4 worlds using that. Opened the lid, put a fan on top of that hot heatsink, change the motherboard jumper from 60 to 66 to get 133Mhz and got 2-3 fps extra. Oh what joy - closer to 15fps now. So I thought til Settlers 2 crashed midway through a 15 hour campaign... Oh dear god.
But my... how things have changed eh? And there is me playing Aradwolf Mud tonight. Though that would have been slower back then on that crap 28.8K Rockwell modem I had.
