    From Yahoo! News

NICE, France (AFP) - Police in southern France were investigating the disappearance of a rough cut of the forthcoming album by Irish rock group U2, amid fears it could be posted on the Internet months ahead of the official release.

Singer Bono, who has a house on the Cote D'Azur, and the three other members of the band paid a discreet visit to police headquarters in Nice on Wednesday to give statements about the possible theft, which took place during a photo shoot at a recording studio in the city, police said.

Altogether some 20 people who were present at the Victorine studios on Tuesday evening were being questioned, they said.

"We have to be careful. Was it lost or was it stolen? An enquiry is underway," said one officer.

"We have numerous theories -- from the fan who wants the rough cut for his collection to the web specialist who wants to be the first to put it out," he said.

The as yet unnamed album is expected to be released in November.

And apparantly there is already some tracks leaked online!

    I can see the headline:

They still haven't found what they're looking for!!

    :p

    I, for one, can't badmouth U2.

I wasn't a huge fan of U2 but after the show they put on at 1st Homecoming Gig at Slane 2001 just a few days after Bono's dad died, it really was amazing!

And i honestly think 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' is a great album, despite what some fans think.

i dont know why but i have never bought any of their albums..they are the kind of band that, ill listen to their songs but wont buy them.....

hmmmm... i'm hardly a huge fan of theirs but i do have pretty much everything they did pre zooropa and they were a groundbreaking band who actually had something to say... and then they promptly disappeared into a goldfishbowl full of coke and now theyre just pathetic and old imo... at one stage i genuinely think they were the best "big" band on the planet... shame they fell so far... as for all that you cant leave behind i struggle to remember even one tune off that album...

Ahhhh they're ok. They put out good singles and they put on a good live show. Fair play to them.

I think 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' was their best album yet.

they just keep getting better imho.

I think all material stuff from Joshua Tree to Pop is class. Every song on each of those albums is memorable.
Didn't like the last album. Bar the singles, I think the rest is just filler. Bono's voice has gone really harsh and thin. It's a pity as he used to have one of the great "stadium" voices. He said recently the fags were the cause. If only they had've brought in the smoking ban after Actung Baby. :D

Btw, I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a publicity stunt.

with you on the publicity stunt thing... the very same happened with the zooropa album... [i think it was that one anyway...] i mena, what on earth were they doing with an unwatermarked copy of the album's master tapes at a photo shoot???

Clearly a publicity stunt, if you're as professional an outfit as U2 you dont loose your next album.

I wasn't fair wrong from this headline! Something similar (don't have it close to hand) was quoted as the headline in the 'Indo' today

yeah, I'm still trying to figure out why they would bring a rough, unfinished cut of their CD to a photo shoot.... I mean, whats the reasoning behind it?
People are saying they want it to get on the net so they can get feedback before release, if its good, then go ahead, if its bad, they can say it was unfinished, and tweek afew bits before release.

Don't worry, Bono, I wont download it, cos your muck.

its probably just a huge publicity stunt for when they do release it so there will be a big hype about it

I thought it was all a publicity stunt until..

In 'The Guardian' today, they had a article about it in which they named police officers (Guy Sapata) involved.

I read somewhere that they can't do this if it's a simple publicity stunt as it would damage the name of the police officials, not to mention the department he / she belongs to.

You'd think the French police would have more important things to do than locate a missing CD.

Still think this is a pure publicity stunt. Bono pulled the same thing last album, saying his laptop cotaining his lyrics was stolen, and appealing for it's return.
U2 are masters of working the media.

So it's, like, a complicated publicity stunt then?

    phht! my heart bleeds.

did bono once say "caught stealing from the thieves"?? Well tough titties you tubby tosser.

bono steals from everyone. u cant watch a doc about a seminal legend without the aul 5"1 bandwagoner givin his two cents.

they've made some **** oversentimantal crap since unforgettable fire and made millions off it so how can anyone be sympathetic?

They brought out some of their best albums after unforgettable fire,Rattle and Hum,Joshua tree,Achtung Baby,All that you cant leave behind.Their only bad ones were zooropa and pop.

I liked Pop. I don't think they've ever released a bad album. Granted they hit a high for a few years but I don't think they've sunk too low. Achtung Baby is still my favourite.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,430 ✭✭✭lee_baby_simms

fair enough. i've just always thought bono has had a desperate desire to be remain popular and thus enter some kind of hall of fame, associating himself with legends, adapting to the sound of the time eg:doin a dance record(pop with howie b), then inviting boyzone into their video...etc.

Anyone who talks like this needs a reality check. Bono: "Most people think we got kicked out of the Garden of Eden. I think we kicked God out of it."

this latest story immediately struck me as a publicity stunt.

i've always liked that song they wrote for Roy Orbison though

has this appeared on the web yet?? (by that I mean the album?)

If not I'd be highly sceptical of the whole story.
