    CCI Welcomes Insurance Reform Proposals

But says more Direct Intervention is Needed

The Chambers of Commerce of Ireland (CCI) has broadly welcomed the publication of the second Interim Report on Reforms to the Irish Insurance Market published by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise and Small business this afternoon (16/07/04) but says more direct intervention is needed to drive down insurance costs.

Speaking this afternoon, CCI President Mark Staunton said, “this report makes several key recommendations but while it is high on aspirations, at this stage we need action not words to make a real difference in lowering insurance premia. Report recommendations that are not acted upon and become mere words on paper will not make insurance companies reduce their premia. These companies want to see real ways that clients are reducing their risk levels.”

“For example, CCI recently launched ChamberSafe – a comprehensive health and safety programme which directly reduces the insurance costs of participating companies. The programme offers participating companies a full health and safety audit of their business, a risk assessment, a health and safety training needs analysis and a tutor-led health and safety management programme. Companies that complete the programme can achieve the OHSAS 18001 industry quality standard and a significant reduction in their insurance premia.”

“We acknowledge that the Government has made significant progress in its quest to cut insurance premia but this report is a stark reminder of how much more can be done towards making a sizeable difference to the cost of insurance in this country. And so we challenge the Government to implement these key recommendations without delay,” he concluded.

    Notes to Editor:

OHSAS 18001 is an occupational health and safety management system, designed to assist companies to make their companies safer and comply with their legal obligations. It has been developed in response to an urgent customer demand for an internationally recognised Occupational Health and Safety Management Specification, against which their management systems could be assessed and certified.

CCI is Ireland’s largest business organisation with 59 member chambers representing over 12,000 businesses nationwide.

ChamberSafe is part-funded by the ESF In-Company Training Measure
