after playing over the holiday I've just started realising how powerful a heavy with a shield is - if i remember correctly it takes quite a few hits with a spindisc to really start hurting a shielded heavy ...

Mortars will definitely take out the heavy's shield, but you probably would need a couple of near-direct hits to really take him down.

I'm curious to know what map you were playing & whether you had any decent support - heavys are a pain in the watoosie, but I've found a resourceful lite/medium can run rings around a (single) heavy - staying very close to the heavy (so the heavy's mortar use is out of the question), and jetpacking around. With three you'd have to be a bit more resourceful, maybe dropping mines...

obviously it would be much easier with 2 or 3 lites... but it sounds like you didn't get much help... not much use, my post i know, but i'd love to come up against a trio like that if only to see how i'd fare.. smile.gif

Hehe, It can be annoying alright, but heavies in the open are basicaly meat, shield pack or not. I've seen *some* players who know how to use a mortar effectively to defend themselves, but not many. The problem is (and I do this a lot) is when the heavy has one single objective in mind, and just charges for it, firing mortars all the time. No matter what you do, you can't take him down before he's lobbed about 3-4 mortars in. On dangerous crossing or snowblind, this can be a real *****.

As a light vs heavies, the most important thing is to NEVER use all your jets. The heavies aren't going anywhere, you don't need altitude for general dodging - but oh boy will you need the energy when that green trail arcs in toward where you've just landed.

Oh, and a shielded heavy has no problem with dropping a mortar at his feet if it will get you and your chaingun off his back. Circle-chainguning is for use against muppet heavies or heavily damaged ones only. smile.gif If you're out in the open as a heavy, and a decent light player spots you, I reckon you've got 30 seconds to live, tops. Getting to the objective and getting your mortars in is what counts.

Of course it all changes when they have light escorts..

very good point about not jet jumping around near heavy's, Teeth smile.gif

Regarding a heavy mortaring near his own feet - can a full shield take a full hit from a mortar? I guess so. Still, I think if it gets rid of yer opponent then grand, but you're betting all you have on one hand - if that mortar doesn't get rid of the fly in yer ointment (e.g. if the lite smartly doesn't use his/her jetpack until that moment smile.gif then there you are with little/no shield left and probably a lite with some considerable height from which to rain discs on yer head.

I think the most trouble i've had with a heavy in the open when i was attacking in lite was the when the heavy effectively used a grenade launcher - a shielded heavy can shrug grenades off, but they eat up lites if they come close...

but no real argument here - like you said, heavies in the open are like popcorn for munching which was why i was curious in my post above about the setup/map/support that YuM had in the game he was getting harrassed in ....

Personally, i love catching heavy's in the open... smile.gif

    A lesson in hitpoints smile.gif

The spinfusor takes one hit point off a light and .6 off a heavy per hit. A shielded heavy loses .3

A shielded heavy has roughly 15 hitpoints, which is why it takes so damned long to kill one.

A mortar damages targets through shields. Lovely. However, only does half the damage (splash) or two thirds (direct hit).

And mortar jumping is cool. It beats the infamous Quake rocket jump hands down.

Winds 25kts, ceiling 15,000, clear vector 13-niner, heavy-alpha-one "clear for take off" - *BOOM* (count 1,2..) *WHOOSH* - Houston, we have ignition. 180kts, gear rotate, retract flaps....

    I luv it smile.gif
