Windows Xp load-up problem

    ok,
    I have a Sony Vaio laptop here,
    2.8ghz,512mb RAM,nice kit but when i turn it on it starts to load up and when it hits the windows xp loadup screen(with the 3 little green boxes running across the bar) it freezes,i tried to start it in safe mode and it gets as far as mup.sys before it just stops.
    I really dont wanna do a full re-install but if i have to i will,any suggestions?
