Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all,
Im have an FYP to do and am thinking of designing an IDS(prob on *nix) as im interested in network security and would like to get into it as a career.
Would anybody have any experiance of same, or advice to give.
Indeed any suggestions of different project ideas is more welcome than you could imagine.

    Cheers

Do you have any ideas of what functionality you'd like to implement? If signature based, then you could start with a simple network grep style application and build features upon that. More ambitious (but more interesting) ideas would be to allow the user to specify rules along the lines of bro or to build in protocol aware functionality (also discussed at the above link).

loads of Info on the web about Snort and its set up etc

but if you are looking for a basic book about it try

"intrusion detection with snort by Rafeeq Ur Rehman"

Runs you through the whole setup easily enough using Snort, Apache, MySql, PHP and ACID. its an easy read too

Most of the information contained in the book can be found on the web in various places, but I found it nice to have a simple guide where I could flick through the pages + it gives you links to where you need to go to find more information + some set-up scripts etc.
