As far as I know, nobody has been charged but they could cut you off untill the end of the month. This has happened to a few customers. Only time will tell.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭visigoth

Can anyone confirm this? that customers have been cut off for going over their cap? has this happened to anyone here?
(a little scared for myself here, if one company does it, maybe they'll all start!)

yes search here and in the irelandoffline forum, quite a few prople have been cut off for cap busting, unfortunately some people still havent learned the lesson that going over the cap has consequences

the cap isnt a guideline and come august (and has already happend in a few cases)eircom will start charging for cap busting, and the rest will sure follow suit

What on earth were you uploading ?

    Probably due to using Bittorrent.

If any of the other companies are smart, they wont imitate Eircom at all!

UTV definitely charge people for cap busting. You have the option of being charged (through the nose) or having your connection switched off for the rest of the month.

    They just started this recently.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭DoesNotCompute

Well, at least UTV give you a choice in the matter...

Once I get setup I'll have to keep an eye on how much porn i'm dowloading, I geuss...:D

Oh yes, wait till they start charging. Then the fun will begin.

Bullet-proof, by anyone's measure, you've transferred (download & upload) more than 1GB of data per day in July. You have to put your hands up and say "Fair cop" tbh.

i just got an email from UTV this morning saying that I have used 80% of my 8gb cap for the month - first time this has happend

I'm not surprised they're are going to start charging for it. 17 GB down is ridiculous. You're basically stealing bandwidth from other users so I hope they do charge you.

If everyone used BB responsibly and not greedily, the providers wouldn't have to start charging.

    Plus, I doubt it's 17GB of freeware :D

    check out my thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=176072
They've admitted making a mistake on my stats, how many more are affected by it and don't know? I'm sure they'd be quick enough to charge you if you went over.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 163 ✭✭Bu11et_Proof

Well i haven't got cut off yet and tbh any one who wishes someone to get charged for it shame on you, i've been a Esat customer since last Sept and never broke the cap if anything i've been under it. Iam not saying that they owe me or anything but iam sure they can spare the bandwidth.

That's not really the point. They may have enough badnwidth, but does that mean you're entitled to use as much of it as you can? The Irish have this awful attitude that if someone gives you an inch, you should take a mile. It's a throwback to the times of British rule, when screwing over the establishment, or abusing some priviledges was a kick in the testicles to the British. Now the only people that the Irish screw over is themselves, yet they continue to do it. This download cap thing is just one manisfestation of it.

NTL's cap is far more reasonable at 30GB per month. What residential user would be downloading more than 1GB a day under normal usage? If you require a connection to allow you to download more than a normal amount, you should have to pay more for it, that's common sense.
TBH, your past download history is irrelevant. A loan that goes unpaid gets someone angry phonecalls and asset seizures - their credit history gets them the loan, it doesn't protect them against the consquences of non-payment.

In this case, you can't really complain. You've downloaded an abnormally large amount. There's not really much to complain about.

Both UTV and Eircom have started charging as of this month- so I'm sure IOL will follow suit.

Presumably they will email you to let you know rather than just sending out the bill.

Have to start living within your cap. (Just went over mine this month :/ )

Typical argument. You bring history into a completely unrelated topic. I don't think he has effected the service in anyway, shape or form by downloading 17 gigs. I think the caps enforced are harsh enough as it is and if he has been a light user over the last few months then surely he can go to town one month and make up for it.

Abuse the system I say. Twist it and make fun of it. It's a joke as it is as is the rest of this country.

Well, you're a perfect example of why my argument is related. It's 17Gigs + the 8 uploaded (unless they're not including downloads, which I'm not sure), which is over 1 Gig a day.
If the uploads aren't included, and this amount is typical of his downloads, he should probably switch provider or package. Could you imagine an exchange full of subscribers, contended at 48:1, all downloading 2GB a day? I'm sure screwing the system would be soo much fun then

It's his money, his account, he can do what he likes with it until IOL tell him to stop or cut him off. Frankly what he does with his account is none of your business.

Well, with respect, he has asked for our opinion on here!
I don't think he should be penalised for going over cap once in nearly a year, i'm sure lots of people have months when they're downloading heavily and then barely make a dent in their cap other months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,394 ✭✭✭jonski

Still never found out what he was downloading ,

I just checked mine , I have been out sick this month so I've been online nearly all day everyday .

3 down 1 up ( can't imagine what the one up is )

    Thats , game playing , irc , e-mail , loads of mods and demo's + mappacks , teamspeak , browsing etc.

Where has he asked for opinions? He wanted to know whether he would be cut off or charged not if what he was doing is right or wrong.

It would be if I had to share an exchange with him.

I just find it funny (and I'm not talking about Bullet-proof here) when some people think they should be allowed to pay for a cheaper package, and leech it for all they can.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 163 ✭✭Bu11et_Proof

Well i pay for a broadband plus account thats just under 100 euros every 2 months
so i think iam paying enough as it is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Davey Devil

Seamus you think Bullet going 2 or 3 gigs over his allowed bandwidth is going to effect any other users performance on a 24:1 contention ratio? I don't think so. As he says himself it's not a regualr thing for him to do it just that this month was higher usual. Give the guy a break. The way your going on you'd swear he was using 50 gigs gigs per month every month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Why are you freaking out so much? He said he's been well under cap for nearly a YEAR and one month he goes over you all jump on him? :-o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

You'd swear I was foaming at the mouth and calling him every name under the sun. Read my posts. I sympathise, but it's hardly an injustice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,394 ✭✭✭jonski

And I couldn't careless how much he d/l's ( as long as he ain't on my box thingy {sure there is a tech term } ) I just wonder how you d/l that much in one month ?

Is it legit ? not that i care , I just can't see that much legit stuff on the net worth d/ling .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,136 ✭✭✭Superman

lads! i think 8 gig a month is fine, its still plenty to do alot with
hell its 2 gig a week!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,018 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I find it very tight to be honest. There's a few of us in the household using the internet by the way.
