Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hows this for a publicity stunt:

Wireless IFSC hacking video available on the internet

22.07.2004 - Film footage demonstrating how easy it is to gain access to unsecured wireless networks in the Irish Financial Services Centre is now available online. Wireless Projects, the Dublin-based company that made the film, said it wanted to highlight the dangers of open wireless, or Wi-Fi networks. The video depicts three different types of hacker attacks. The first example shows an accidental hack where a user simply turns on their wirelessly enabled laptop and manages to connect to the nearest unsecured network. As a result, they are able to send emails and browse the internet for free.

Two more examples of malicious hacks are also shown. As one company had not changed the default passwords for its wireless network, it was possible to gain access easily to a router or access point. In the video, the demonstrator says: “I could implement my own security, or I could prevent others from accessing the network at all because they hadn’t followed some basic security rules.”

In the third hack we are shown how it is possible to gain access to an unknown user’s PC over a Wi-Fi connection. A hacker could install a virus on the system or delete and change files.

According to Wireless Projects, part of the reason behind filming the security breaches was due to the increasing number of open or unsecured wireless networks in the corporate environment. Earlier this year, the IT provider LAN Communications produced a survey of wireless security practices in three business parks in Ireland. The IFSC fared worst of the three in that report, with almost three quarters of wireless access points found to have not even the most basic wireless security settings.

More recent findings from Wireless Projects suggest that companies based in the IFSC have improved security since then; worse offenders are to be found on or near Dublin’s O’Connell Street and Stephen’s Green. Every week Wireless Projects conducts a ‘War-Walk’, checking on wireless security in different sections of Dublin city and publishing the results on its website.

Merrion Square and Mount Street show the highest concentration of wireless devices but only 41pc of these are open; that is, had no security procedures. O’Connell Street by contrast has open networks in 80pc of cases and 75pc of the networks around Stephen’s Green and Harcourt Street were open.

The wireless security video is available to download in RealPlayer and Windows Media format from the Wireless Projects website, www.wirelessprojects.ie. The site also contains further data on the ‘War-Walking’ exploits, updated weekly.

Really says a lot about the quality of the admins they hire. I am no expert by far but I have come across some people that are in the IT business and they dont really deserve to be there due to their lack of basic knowledge. And I wouldnt buy the excuse of its staff in general bringing in hardware and so on, the blame game is usually fun regarding this kinda thing.

Well if I'm ever about the IFSC and need access :p

What ever about bad admins I dont agree with the Wireless Projects crowd touting for busniess by pulling stunts highlighting to wanabe crackers and script kiddies where to go to cause havoc. Funny thing is if they did what they say they did they broke the law and should get a kick in the arse.

Plenty of people working in IT who havent a clue. Met the special ICT advisor to the minister for comms. Handn't the first clue what he was talking about, compleate chancer. If the government cannt get em what hope do most companies have. Most dodgy IT types get by taking credit for other peoples work or get promoted for finding other people to do the work making them look good (without claiming all the credit).

Just curious: what law? As in, if they were to be charged, with what specific offence?

Ummmm, Maybe the CRIMINAL JUSTICE (THEFT AND FRAUD OFFENCES) ACT, 2001.

Depending on what they were trying to do. Section 9 says
A person who dishonestly, whether within or outside the State, operates or causes to be operated a computer within the State with the intention of making a gain for himself or herself or another, or of causing loss to another, is guilty of an offence.

So, if they include loss of bandwidth from the victim then maybe it could stick. I can't find anything about specifically breaking into systems, or wireless networks. Its the sort of thing I should probably know about for my job, so if anyone does know...:D
