I'm looking at a 2011 330d that a dealer has close to manchester. Mot & tax expired in July. Assuming the everything is ok with the car is there any issue with driving it back with no mot/tax? Or will that need to be sorted before taking it from the UK?

This is asked lots of times in this thread. Nobody can advise you what to do or whether you will get away with it but some people take the chance of driving to the ferry port without tax. However there are no guarantees, the risk and potential consequences are with you.

The place I dealt with said it was either bring trade plates or tax it for 6 months.before they would let me take it away. 6 months tax was 60 odd pounds, and they were able to tax it for me there and then.

I believe you can claim whatever tax is left once you register the car here.

Does anyone know if they will transfer your MOT to NCT if you don’t have the original signed cert? I just printed the mot cert from the gov.uk website. Only difference is its not signed in the bottom right corner.

Just thought I’d let people know that they accepted the MOT I printed from gov.uk which wasn’t the original MOT cert

According to their site they were meant to be putting a stop to the transferring of an MOT to an NCT from today onwards depending on Brexit but not sure if it’s still going ahead

What is the quickest way to get car taxed when it comes on the system? Online or go into the tax office? Do the tax office give you the disc on the spot?

You can tax it both online and in the tax office the next working day. The tax office do give you the disc there and then.

cheers that's what I was asking, I'll get them to mot & tax it so. I had my suspicion that the police are more strict on this in the UK than here.

Ive never been stopped on the way to or at Holyhead. But Police did do checks whilst waiting in line at Merseyside and I only had my car taxed as Dealer wouldnt let me leave without it.

The minimum you can tax for in UK is 6 months. You simply advise DVLA when you get back that vehicle has been exported and they will refund the remaining 5 months with a sterling cheque.

Guys, I have just bought a Skoda Superb in NI. Car will be remaining in the north until Christmas so I can probably get away with waiting until the new new year to VRT it. The question is, am I better off doing it in 2020 with the new tax on nox being applied but the year a year older or going it this year? Car is euro 6 but I cant seem to find any data on nox to multiply by the new government tax

Thanks, I am getting NOx of 62mg from this. The new tax is charged at €5 per mg for the first 60mg and €15 for over 60mg. Therefore total for this car is €330.
Now to pay vrt in 2019 is €3507 (Current OMSP is €19484 x VRT rate 18%)
I am going to assume a depreciation to €17000 after Jan 1st which will be VRT of €3060 so total for vrt in 2020 is €3390 which is marginally less.
Am I correct in this? Are there any pitfalls I am missing assuming the car will stay in NI until January (there may because trip south at Christmas to visit family)

Ensure that you will have adequate insurance cover for that period.

Did you subtract the 1% on VRT rates that was imposed in the last budget on diesel cars.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,765 ✭✭✭deezell

Which will reduce VRT to 2890, so with 330 Nox Tax, 3220 in total, a nice bit less, but only if your estimate for depreciation is correct.

No I havent! So is this an extra 1% that will apply in January or is this scrapped in January to be replaced by the nox tax ?

Correct, The 1% is scraped in January and replaced with NOx tax,
So in you case its 17% of omsp VRT instead of 18%

You can tax it on line using the last 6 digits of the VIN, the disc takes about 4 days to be delivered.

I paid my VRT last week, but I didn't receive the V5C from back. Does the Revenue keep the UK V5C? Will they issue me with a new form or certificate of ownership?

VRT center keeps V5C, when you tax the car you will get the registration cert for the car.

    Hey all,

I'm looking at importing a 1 year old Polo, will be purchasing from a VW dealer in the UK. Does anyone know if the warranty is valid here, or is it a case of needing to go back up North if something goes wrong?

Lads looking at getting something like a BMW X5 is before our new nox charge comes about in Jan.../ just wondering what the craic is with importing the likes of a 3 litre diesel as it stands? Can I take the vrt on the ros calculator as right? Is there another 1% diesel charge on top of that rate too or does the calculator show the full charge?

Any one advise of good reliable car dealers that sleek the likes of an X5 also and would warranties be recognized here?

In short, VAG cars have 2 year European warranty, with an extra 3rd year provided milage is less than 60K (UK) or 90K km (RoI). The first 2 years are assured, the third year may be specific to UK, you may get parts only cover here. The same goes for extended warranties after 3 years, they're usually supplied by a specialist warranty provider, such as MapFre, and they are generally region specific, but often with allowances for foreign travel from the UK, (but not export).
I was ran out of the service department of a Mercedes main dealer here when I presented with a faulty rain sensor 5 days after the purchase of a 2016 12 month extended warranty UK Mercedes main dealer supplied car. Unpleasant experience. I had anticipated this, and had sought and got a reduction equivalent to the cost of purchasing a limited main component warranty here, though I haven't bought this yet, about €380. I fixed rain sensor myself, just needed reseating.

    Hi,
When attempting to exchange a UK MOT cert for NCT cert is the 15.50 still being waived, as below it states it is on the NCTS website, but the form states to include it.

"In order to obtain an EU recognition certificate for a private vehicle you must complete an Mutual Recognition Application Form and return the completed application form and required fee of €15.50 (this fee is being waived until further notice) "

    Thanks in advance.

Welll there's your answer then. They can't be arsed to update the online .pdf form, so they just stick a line in the FAQ. Couldn't even edit out the end of the sentence requesting the fee, so the sentence is a contradiction in terms, but thats probably down to a legal or a bean counter keeping future options open. Very civil service.
Sure send in the cheque for €15.50, see will they send it back to you

Don’t even bother sending the cheque. I only did it a few days ago without sending anything.
