Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wireless Net Connection for 56k modems

I'm moving house soon and dont want the hassle of running telephone extension cables all over the house for my PC's Modem. Eircom have informed me that high-speed lines won't be available in the area I'm moving to for a 'good while' - that probably means I'll be stuck with 56k dial-up until 2024!!! Anyways, I need advice on wireless connection products for use with a 56k modem to the phone socket for internet connection. Cheers

You have a few options. If you want an out-of-the-box solution, look for an access point with built-in 56K modem - not too many of them around, but they do exist - IIRC, Apple and Buffalo both have (had?) them.

If you don't mind a bit of tinkering, get hold of an old PC, an external serial modem, and a wireless PCI card. Put them all together, put a linux distro on, and build your own fully-configurable, future-proof AP. You may be able to do this with Windows ICS as well, but I've no direct experience of that.

What about a bluetooth modem ? Acer do them (Bluesurf??) - the modem is plugged into the usual telephone socket and connectivity is via standard bluetooth dongles (or inbuilt) - costs around eur99 on www.conrad.de

Another option (very hard to find) is using a dect modem - same idea as above but use dect recievers on the PCs.. never really took off though I did see them in fnac in France last year. BT/Sagem did a model as well..

Just be aware that the Uk site doesn't have as big a range as the German site. You should also order their catalogue - around 1000 pages and updates a couple of times per year..

Donj - glad to be of help - I often thought about getting that modem !
