Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Got this text message this morning from 086 383 2032:
"Summer Special -- FREE TEXTS! Top up by E20 or more in August & you will get 25 free texts. To avail of this offer, reply FREESMS to this text. From O2"

    Me smells a scam...

i got that too and i wondered why you had to reply to that text to avail of the offer..

didn't make much sense.. but then most of the business world doesn't make sense to me so i just deleted it

By replying, you are potentially subscribing to some service, whether its getting ringtones or porn wallpapers.

I didnt get this message myself.

It is worrying how they got your numbers!

Not really, as long as they registered on the o2 website.

Official o2 messages generally don't come from a standard phone number. Probably a scam alright.

actually there is one number that O2 official messages tend to come from, i cant think of it now, but it is a standard 086XXXXXXX number.

You get 250 free text messages each month with O2, the catch is that u can only send them from there webpage. Pretty handy if u have no credit though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭Spunog UIE

i don't see what they wouldn't bring it out tho, they'd get a lot more people topping up with money they'll eventually spend, 25 texts is nothing.

*ME RUBS HIS 085* and everyone i got to get one so i get allllll the free texts in the world to them every month for my 20euros and i get like 3 euro back on top of that. Damn stubborn bastids on 087 in the mountains...you know who you are, wastin my crd!!!! eh credit :D

If you get a text bundle from *105# it sends you a message to tell you you've gotten your text messages and it's from some random 086 number...

I got the message yest and signed up. They possibly want to target ppl who don't use their mobiles much (like me), or customers who have some other thing in common.

If they sent you a message saying just top up by €20 and you get X amount of txt's, people would tell their friends, who aren't necessarily eligable (ie 02 don't want to target them). Having to reply kind of makes it more official, in a way, can't think of another word for it (i'm not in marketing). Point is the customer would be more likely to buy the €20 having replied. And remember to buy the credit also.

It's a promotion to get people to use text messages, i'd say. Why give addicted texters free texts when they're making money? Better off doing a promotion for everyone who barely sends any to get them to try it out more.....

    I don't think its a con.

Vodafone are offering something similar. Top up by €20 and get an extra €2 credit free.

But that is being advertised on the radio. I havent heard of the O2 offer, anyone check O2's website? Since it hasn't been recieved by all registered O2 customers then I think it probably is a scam.

I'd sign up to Metor without a 2nd thought if they had reception in Donegal. Obviously, without reception, a mobile phone in a useless lump of plastic, copper and akalines that needs to be recharged every few days.

ye that sucks alright, because if you can get reception then they really are easily better value than anyone else. I have a full reception all the time except for one guys house in the mts :), everywhere else i've always had a full signal, all over Dublin, Kildare, Wexford, Waterford, and Galway. Lucky me.

When you say Waterford I take it you did not go out to Tramore so. The meteor signal is non-existent out there. Meteor will actually tell you that themselves

A girl I work with got this message and I told her to ring O2 to report/ask about it before replying. The guy at the other end thought it was dodgy but went to check it out anyway and it turned out that it is a legit O2 thing.

I got a txt for the 100 texts for 7.50 from O2 and there was no number for it, the text came from O2 and the reply number was O2. So maybe that offer is a bit boggie.....

The point is if O2 sent the message, it would say the sender is "O2" not "+353863832032" - which did your friend get the message from and was it for 25 or 100 free texts?

I got a free sim card from a mate with €60 credit and just used it for calls. I never put any credit into it but I got a text from an 086 number telling me because I'm a loyal customer all I have to do is reply to the message and get 20 free texts every moth for 3 months. The only way you can reply is by topping up so it seems like a good idea by 02 to get you to do just that.
