downloding to external drive causes xp to freeze.

recently i bought a maxtor 80 gig external hard drive and connected it to my pc via USB 2.0. It works grand but lately if am downloading files from WinMx to the hard drive, after 3 or 4 hours of downloading the pc just freezes completely. I know for a fact that it is not in standby or in sleep mode as nothing can be done…

I know for a fact that it is not in standby or in sleep mode as nothing can be done so it has to be rebooted. this is annoying me a lot and it's fine if i am downloading to my internal hard drive. Anyone got any idea what i can do to stop it from freezing windows xp when downloading to the external drive??

any help would be much appreciated.
