    Ahm it's something to do with watching your pints and quarts... measures if you will.

    It's an old English phrase.

    Found two ansers...

    1. In the olden days of printing, typesetting was done by actually choosing each letter and putting it in the type frame to be inked and then printed. Because the letters "p" and "q" look the same -- reversed -- there was often a mixup. Remember, that the letters appear backwards to the typesetter, so that they will show up in their usual fashion when they are pressed to paper. [The problem with this explanation, however, is that there is no similar expression for "b" and "d" -- two other letters that are reversed.

    2. In the pubs, bartenders would keep a "tab" on the amount of pints and quarts consumed by their patrons. Pint was shortened to "p" and quart became "q." "Minding your p's and q's" was (1) a way to keep track of how much money was owed and (2) a way to keep some drinkers from over-indulging.
