It's a similation of the primitive man. You are part of a tribe, a small community, and you have to play your part to ensure the survival of your tribe. There are various classes you can pick from. The warrior class gets a big bone club and their main task is to defend the tribe or kill the other tribe. The hunter, armed with a primitive bow and arrow must go hunt and bring back food etc. The game ends when your tribe killed all the other tribes or your tribe found and successfully defend the monolith for 5 days or everyone dies from boredom.

I'm going to assume that this guy is not messing. smile.gif

Tribes is a multiplayer combat game.

The differences to other FPS games is...

    1. Environment. The game is played outdoors and indoors. No joke when you realise the levels are huge with mountains and remote bases (some sky bases).

    2. resources. You have to buy your weapons (well at least good ones) from weapon stations in your base. These stations are powered by a generator in your base along with all your base defenses. So if the enemy takes out your generators you can't suit up. So part of the game was managing your resources by having guards who build up turret defenses and go around repairing stations and other things.

    3. Character types. One other point was you could pick different kinds of armor. The light can use sniper weapon and move extremly fast. The medium is just that. The heavy moved the slowest but could load out more weapons and could also carry a mortor cannon which (orginally) could be aimed by a 'spotter', someone else using a laser targetting system on the enemy object.

    4. APC's. You had three kinds of aircraft (only light armor can drive). The scout being a fast one man attack craft fired missiles. The other two LPC+HPC are carriers. the HPC moved the slowest but had 1 driver and 4 people. Pretty awsome watching as the HPC comes over a hill with 3 guys firing mortors and 1 guy repairing the ship and people from damage.

    5. Commander. Although not much used one other aspect of the game was you could command and watch your forces on the battlefield via an overhead map. This allowed you in the safty of your base to issue orders and see how everything is doing.

    6. Turret gunners. Turrets (both placed and static ones) could be controlled via command consoles in your base, so you could defend your base from incoming enemy by shooting at them.

    7. Load time. The map takes about 20 seconds to load on an average machine. If the terrain hadn't changed maps could be customised server side with adding little to no extra load time.

All in all the game was pretty groundbreaking stuff for it's release (2 years ago?). One of the nice aspects was if you were no good at quake style combat, then you could become a sniper or a pilot or help out in base. So even the crap player had a role. smile.gif

The bad points on the game? (in my opinion).
    1. Ping is everything. a low pinger will dominate the game easily against high pingers.

    2. HUDs. You could script new HUD's into the game but some of them were pretty much unfair if no one else was using them, like auto targetting Mortors. Actually client side scripting killed the game in my eyes as it was so easy to cheat after that.

    3. MOD's. Mods are well and good but some of them that came out were just nuts and trying to find a server which hadn't been doctored in some way or another is hard (at least with people on it).

Ignore Hobbes, hes on crack wink.gif Only messin, hes spot on with his description for the most part.
Tribes is THE best FPS out there. Once you get used to using a jetpack and playing a game in 3 dimensions rather than 2, other games seem limited in comparison.
Speaking as someone who only started playing recently, the 'bad points' dont really apply imho, Sure theres scripting, but most of the cheat stuff has been dealt with now.
The hardest thing about the game is that theres a fairly steep learning curve.
Drop by Netshop or Ign tribes servers and if theres anyone on, theyll help u out getting started, otherwise stick to barrysworld.
