Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I installed the AdBlock Plugin for Firefox. It's brilliant! It is a bit like image blocking, except you can create a mask for images/iframes.

I've been running it on a few sites (BB site being the worst so far for trying to redisplay adverts). The pages look like before all this advertising crap started. Its a breath of fresh air.

However I can see advertising models changing or dying because of it. :/

It's fantastic. And unlike some other ad blockers it blocks the ad before it gets downloaded (other ad blockers allow the ad to be downloaded just not shown, so the site is still as slow as ever).

I've found it does a excellent job, can't beat wildcards of */banners/* :D
BUT I've found I can't block the google txt advert when I login to gmail.com, if I do it blocks EVERYTHING on the whole page
    :(
Other then that adblock along with default pop-up blocking in Mozilla works a threat :D:D

Some of the rules I have set in adblock

    http://au.i1.yimg.com/*
    http://us.a1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/*

Yes it's the main reason I'm so pro-Firefox :D It shows you a different internet to what everyone else is seeing - it make me pity poor IE users who afto put up with ads everywhere and all the time

i use internet explorer and popup cop, it suppresses images, flash movies, scripts and popups, it has a nice little shifter too that allows for different levels of annoying sites

What about sites that rely on advertising to stay open? Do you block the Boards.ie banners?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I don't mind the google ads like we have on boards - its garish animated gifs/flash ads that really piss me off - they get instantly blocked.

You gotta love Firebird - and if recent reports are anything to go by its eating into IE's share too.

If you've got a guilty conscience you can allow the ads to be downloaded, just not viewed.

I can't remember ever clicking on a banner anyways, 99% of them are US based and have no relevance to me anyway.

I don't mind boards adverts or google adverts for that matter. It is the crappy flashing "Look at me" adverts or the ones that take up 3/4 of the page.

I've clicked on a few boards.ie adverts to give them revenue, but in general an internet advert (especially annoying ones) guarantees I don't buy the product.

    lol

google ad at the top of this page:
    Try Ultimate Ad Block
Scan your PC for harmful Spyware & Block all Ad's Now. Try Free! aff

Does that sound funny to anyone else? Web-advertising a product that blocks web ads. Its like anti-spam companies spamming you with ads for their product.

Aye, AdBlock is brilliant. Particularily on some sites that won't display until the ads are all downloaded, *cough*ITV*cough* :D, works a treat! :D

I always thought that a small fee was paid to have the banner on the page in the first place, extra was then paid if users clicked on it.

I'm still going to block all ads. If boards.ie needs the money then they should set up a PayPal account so we can donate to. I'd happily pay revenue that boards.ie loses from having me blocking ads.

Block the ads. Become a boards.ie subscriber.

    Or, just block the ads.

I've only ever clicked on one or two, when I was new to the Internet...I soon learned that you can't win $20 from catching a monkey so I stopped clicking the ads.

**** thats expensive, i'd imagine there be a lot more people if it was reduced. 15-20euro per year and I'd think about it.
