Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I noticed one of these in the GAA forum so I thaught that there could be one in Soccer.

Rules are easy Ill start off with a question and if someone gets it right that person asks the next etc.
Answers must be confirmed by the person asking the question so the next can be asked.

My question is an easy one:
What is the world record transfer fee for a defender and who is it?

I think that's one of your lot, Andyman, Rio for £29m. Thought you'd be watching them playing in the Vodafone Tournament!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭andyman

I was waiting for someone to say £30m.But you're right.
    Your turn

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭Drag00n79

Ok, I'l stick with the transfer theme. I want to know who was the first player in world football to be transferred for £1m or more and the year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭andyman

    That was Trevor Francis(I think).

Here one to shock everyone ;)

Whats the goals to game ratio for Robbie Fowler when he was sh!t with Leeds?

It's not Trevor Francis. It's before him. He was the first in Britain.

  • Registered Users Posts: 520 ✭✭✭Xcom2

    oh sneaky!

    G

  • Registered Users Posts: 520 ✭✭✭Xcom2

OK If he is not British then how about rephrasing the question?

"transferred for £1m or more and the year."

Saying £ makes it quite difficult to google it as it will naturally keep giving me Trevor Francis.

    G

In other word's give us a hint!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭Drag00n79

I used the £ sign because that is the whole point — he was the first player to be transferred for a value over the equivalent of £1m. Hint: Italian
Ah, I've given it way now!

    Currently topical:

What is the furthest any Irish team (name the team) has got in Europe?

Who are the most succesful (in terms of trophies) Irish team?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭andyman

Sorry Bateman but you must get a question right in order to ask one.

    My one is:
What was the main reason Blackburn sold Alan Shearer for £15mill to Newcastle in 1995?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭andyman

By the way the answers to those are the Third Qualifying Round (Shelbourne)and Shamrock Rovers are the most successful

well they had bought the premiership had they not and similar to leeds were financially screwed as they werent actually a big club. probably way off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭Drag00n79

Because he is a Geordie and he did not want to play for ManU? The transfer was in 1996 just after Euro '96 not 1995.

Based on what exactly? No EL club (including the Homeless Hoops) have ever got past the 2nd round of a full Euro Competition. Shels are the first EL side to win 2 rounds in a season (but it has to be weighted against the fact that they were preliminary rounds!).

The correct answer(s) is Linfield who got to the QF's of the European cup in 1966-67 and Glentoran who got to the QF's of the CWC in 73-74.

And yet there was a third choice keeper. I assume that you do not know the answer then smack... I deliberately picked one that will be hard to google.

Ireland had only two official GK's at WC 94 but .... Niall Quinn was known to play in goals a lot in training but .... he was injured and missed the squad so I'm gonna guess Steve Staunton cos (I think ? ) he played in goals for Liverpool once.

The answer I was looking for in that was that it was a World Record Fee at the time afaik.

I really made a mess of that question.
