without blues there would be no metal, punk had little to do with black sabbath, maybe u didnt understand what they were singing about, but it was hardly meaningless

Ok, well after reading all of the thread i have to agree that it should be left as is! You can post about any alternative music in the rock/metal section!!
And those who go into these thread's to slag can be complained about and booted!!

Cruise if you don't want ppl to slag your style in music then you really shouldn't start slagging others taste's, cause you are bound to sought everywhere you go!!

    Heh
Yeah you don't hear all the 'hardcore', 'thrash', 'death', 'Industrial' etc people moaning about a lack of forum for their kind do you? :p
It all comes under the heading of ROCK/METAL

I woulda thought it was kinda obvious that all types of rockish music was covered under that.

...some people need less anger/caffeine/sugar in their lives.

Punk started off as stripped down rock'n'roll about five years after Sabbath got started (ie the birth of metal). The punk ethic isn't only found in punk music. Before the Sex Pistols (formed 1975) and the Ramones (1974) started groups like Throbbing Gristle (existing as COUM Transmissions since 1969, the same year as Black Sabbath, and in 1975 changed their name to Throbbing Gristle) were going further with the so-called punk ethic than any punk band has gone. Punk was supposed to be anti-rock'n'roll, a middle finger to the likes of Led Zeppelin but it never managed to step outside of rock. Yes punk was a cultural movement as well as just an anti-rock statement but after a few years most of the scene had burnt out and the whole movement splintered into millions of sub genres.

As for punk's lyrics having meaning and Black Sabbath's not, compare the Ramones' "I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" to Sabbath's "Supernaut", both are songs about getting loaded. Sabbath are as much a working class band as any punk band. So in short, as for trying to say that Einstürzende is being narrow minded (which I know him not to be) you have shown how little you actually know about punk and its ethics.

And please note, I'm not saying any of this because I think punk is a substandard genre, I love punk but I don't think it's unique enough to warrant a new forum and I think your reasons are dubious to say the least. /rant

This place doesnt owe you a favour, hostile comments are no match for constructive suggestions "and if u dont know that ur an idiot";)

Okay okay people, how about calling the forum "Rock & all it's sub-genres"? A bit long-winded but at least ya won't have arguments erupting about other forums being needed like Punk or Industrial or some strain of Metal etc.

Arse. Punk is full of fakes like Johnny Rotten.

This thread is going nowhere fast.

I've very little time for a person who will complain about nowhere to post about something, despite having it been made abundantly clear to them that this is the exact place to post about it.

This is still going to be the Rock/Metal forum because it pretty clearly encompasses everything, unless you want to get uppity about it. We don't need a forum called rock/punk/goth/industrial/hardcore/prog/death/thrash/doom/viking/metal just to SPELL IT OUT for people who should show a bit of cop on.

The ignorance of people on this thread is amazing. Pro and anti Punk alike.
Personally I think that punk is a completely different genre than Rock or Metal and doesn't fall into any subgenre. Infact I would rank it higher than Metal as a genre in itself. Taking into account alot of the arguments made the forum should be renamed just Rock, but thats a little petty at this stage.

I wasn't around when the forum was created, but the impression I got was that the reason it was named Rock/Metal was because its moderator AngleWhore (Karl Hungus) tend to lean more toward metal (I'm not trying to start an argument Karl, or imply anything other than I said, its just the impression I got).

PORNAPSTER said that punk is full of fakes, naming one, Johnny Rotten. I wouldn't nessicarly call Johnny a fake, but I personally don't like the Sex Pistols, or Johnny Rotten. Tbh every type of music has its fake characters. Mostly its got to do with money. Punk is about politics, making a stand against something. It annoys me when a band are trying to make a point about something and its just completely lost on the crowd who don't really understand, or want to. (although I'm sure alot of it goes over my head).

Although I'm not happy about it there will never be a Punk forum. This debate ended months ago.

It was Pornapster who requested it in the first place, the name had nothing to do with me. But considering that there is a lot of people who listen to Metal on boards, it does make sense.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

    Fair enough.

God....I really don't want to keep this argument going...but...

Theres alot of people who listen to Punk on boards aswel.

splitting up into more sub-genres would create more elitism within the forums.

although if making a punk forum stops people whinging here im all for it.

But you have to teach them they can't get everything they want by whinging! :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭nadir

surely Rock / Metal covers everything from rock to metal, including punk.
Its just rediculous to want a forum for every type of music, considering so many groups/musicians fall between many different catagories.

Its better to have broad catagories, that way you get crossover of opinions and come into contact with new music.

  • Registered Users Posts: 316 ✭✭LightofDarkness

I'm sorry, this argument is so bluntly ridiculous I had to post. (i always get the feeling that people view me as somewhat of an elitist)

Firstly "punk is soooo different from metal." Yeah, here's the difference, metal has a hugely varied sound. Punk, however, does not. You can shout to me about avant-garde punk bands like Refused till you're blue in the face but in the end, punk just always sounds the same to me. And that's my 2 cents.

Punk "ethics" seems like a worthy reason to go about adding a name change? This place is about MUSIC. Not ethics. Are we going to start discussing the most prudent way of spreading anarchism and how cool we are 'cuz we're so nihilistic? I THINK NOT. This place isn't an ethical debate forum. It's a music forum.

    End communication.
