Could have been due last year?

Shouting will be a waste of breath. Your car was due its NCT last year and the mechanic neglected to have it done - the car only gets passed up until its next due date and not two years from the date of the test. Yes, its a money racket and you should lobby your TD to have the NCT scrapped as they are a private (Danish) company collecting tax for the Irish government and they aren't making the roads safer, just reducing the ability of the Irish people to drive 'ahem' interesting cars.

The government gets nothing from the NCT. It makes it's money on the overall saving to society from not having bangers on hte road.

...and the VRT etc on the cars that replace them when they are taken off the road.

Government gets VAT afaik on all the tests as well...

A newly imported car can sometimes be only given a short NCT cert depending on the year of manufacture too, which is a complete joke. And despite what any tree huggers say to the contrary, it is a proven racket... I'm all on for safe motoring, and for bangers being taken off the road, but the crowd running the tests are a law unto themselves...
