Okay some questions!

    * How is this game played, through a games server running somewhere or one on one?

    * What platforms does the client run on?

    * Can you play the Second Age with UO or what's the story with mods/add-ons?

    * Do we need an Irish server for this stuff?

UO is through a games server created by the makers of the game. You pay $9 a month to use the game. This gives you the ability to play on about 10-20 shards with 4-5? characters on each.

    * What platforms does the client run on?

Only Windows afaik. Rev made a mention of Linux port and I think mac heads are campaining for a port as well.

    * Can you play the Second Age with UO or what's the story with mods/add-ons?

The Second age is the newer version of UO. You can play UO with T2A but you can't play T2A with just UO (confused yet? <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">)

Mods/add-ons are available but invalidate your account on the server if you are caught.

    * Do we need an Irish server for this stuff?

Erm nope. There are two european Shards (what I mean is there are group of servers count as a "Shard"). You can get server emulators but they are easy to hack and in some cases using them will invalidate your game.

Btw this group should be called "Roleplaying" (despite the fact Venom thinks he's playing Quake Deathmatch). That would cover Baulders Gate and EverQuest discussions as well.

Hobbes has answered most of the questions, but heres my bit.

The main client is windows, but there is a side project of a Linux clinet which answering my own question seems to support most of the features of the windoze client with the exception of the movie at the start and the midi music. But its not supported by origin.

The second age can be seen as an expansion pack for the first age (ultima), and registered users of that can upgrade at little or no cost (about 5 quid, or if you can wait I've an spare upgrade). It's next to impossible to get the second age in ireland but the first is still sold in Game as I know and you can upgrade using that. It even works out cheaper.

As for servers, origin dont give out their servers application. There are downloadable illegal server app's (origins words), but to be honest there not much use.

Yea, change the name of the group to 'online rpgs', or somefing
