Bare in mind I don't play SWG so this is coming from second hand information.

Appears certain people figured out how to dupe large sums of cash and were using it in game to buy/tip for things. SOE solved it by banning anyone who had duped cash in their possession at that time (regardless if you knew or not that you had recieved funny money).

There was a huge protest in Naboo by the gamers whereby a GM showed up and told them they would shut down the server if they didn't stop. Which they actually did.

    http://vnboards.ign.com/SWG_General_Discussion/b5184/74129279/p1

Oh the great thing was, you could put a vendor up and log out then come back the next morning to find you were banned because a cheater bought one of your things on sale.

They have also been deleting posts like crazy on the Intrepid boards to hide the fact.

    an update
    Credit Dupe Update
All persons potentially involved in the dupe have been banned or suspended.
People who have been banned or suspended are going through the appeals process now. Each case is resolved privately between the customer and customer service. The appeals process will be complete by early next week.
Over 75% of the duped credits are being removed from the economy preventing hyper-inflation in the SWG economy.
No vendor owners were suspended for purchases made from their vendor with duped credits, only people that had money directly transferred to them were affected.
We are committed to maintaining a safe and fair playing environment and exploiting will not be tolerated.

This was available as of yesterday

I have to say I've been trying this game for a couple of days now and I'm not impressed at all.. laggy and fairly boring. So far I cant say I'll be holding on to my subscription.

One question, what the *hell* is "Buffing", and do I really want to know?
let me clear this one up. 'Buffing' or to 'buff' (noun) is doing something that temporarily improves character skills or attributes. in most games they are character improvement spells like "POTION OF SPEED +10" , the character runs like a rabbit on viagra... you get it now?

As per usual SOE screw up again. Instead of keeping Sturm, fixing the bug(more on this later) banning the dupers and then informing the player base like a normal company would, SOE went a different route.

They told the player base they would be banning anyone with duped credits/items and then fixing the bug. Now its gotten to a stage where allot of innocent players got banned due to being tipped credits or having items on there vendors bought with duped credits. For non SWG folks tipping is a way of giving another player credits. Tipping is normally used for paying for services like doc buffs and dancers etc. You cant stop another player tipping you btw. Allot of players I know got banned due to being tipped credits by a duper who didn't like them or though it would be funny as hell (it is really) to cause a player grief like this. Most of the people I know who did get banned were the asswipes of the server so no loss really.

    THE BUG ITSELF
This is a very old bug. One of my guild mates has been reporting it since he discovered it since Feb this year and nothing was done about it. Tells and bug reports and emails via the web were all ignored by SOE even tho he was trying to help fix a badly broken game. Writing this post got me thinking about what SOE has done to or added to the game that hasn't been a disaster and I honestly cant think of one thing they added that hasn't been bugged or that hasn't screwed up something else.

    GG SOE

I had a bad feeling going into SWG cause I knew SOE were making it. I had a worse feeling during the run up to the game seeing the direction that soe were taking it and their attitude in general. When the game came out, I still decided to give it a try.

I have to admit that there were certain things about the game that was good, eg. the crafting system. But in all honesty the fun factor is much reduced in this game.

The jedi system sucked, for a long while.
the PvP has and still does suck.
    the support is terrible.
cheaters do prosper. The richest players on the servers were people who were happy to sit in a cave all day with their alarm clock and go for a click fest every 30 seconds.

the game also had too much emphasis on items. It wasn't just that items were a Part of the game or an optional enhancement. It was that you needed the best items for your char to be decent, especially for jedi, i would spend more time trying to aquire krayt pearls or crystals than being able to level my jedi. In any case, SOE have proven themselves to me after evercrap...

i certainly will never buy an soe game again no matter how much I am attracted to the franchise.

I think DAOC came closest to getting a good balance, but they ruined it with the constant nerfs, then Shrouded isles and TOA which were basically just time sinks.

And now mythic are coming out with a PvE only mmorpg Imperator.....

Memneh! I kept your Jedi thru publish 9 and sorted it out with the right skills and equipment etc. Decent saber components are very easy to get ahold of now. I reckon playing a Jedi is the best way to go atm, but I wasn't interested in doing that. I got fed up waiting for them to sort out PVP (since that's all I did really) and unsubbed.

I may resub when JTL comes out.. haven't decided yet. WOW PVP server looks pretty damn cool. It's very close to the way a standard DAOC server worked, but better in that you can enter the enemy realm's home zones as long as you don't mind their players getting the first strike on you.

    Teeth.

hey teethy long time no see, must meet up in city centre some time.

yea jedi are cool now, but i've lost the swg addiction, i really don't think i could get back into it again. Not to mention i still hate their PvP system, DAOC's is far superior. I'm too disillusioned with swgs to get back into it again really.

To tell the truth i'm pretty dissilusioned with MMO's in general. They are all the same now, EQ clones, PvE focussed, time sink focussed, very little focus on actual fun, though WoW PvP server soudns promising.

soe wasted thier chance with me so to speak.

the new WoW pvp sounds uber, but the sucky thing is that i start my final year from monday and i have a lot of work to do this year, so i dunno if i wanna take up another hardcore mmorpg addiction as it would be bad for my results, relationship and future career prospects :P

Ofc i could always try being a casual gamer, but i think u know with me its just not possible :P

I won't have the 6-10 hours a day minimum that i'm used to when playing mmo's and unless i can compete at the top, i just don't enjoy it as much :P

Lets hope Adnans didn't spend all the money and I hope he's not really a monster :D

Anyway back to SWG, SOE have made a bad move here, the belligerent cries of 'nerf' compare nothing with arousing the sympathy of a huge portion of the server player base and rightly so. I'm just glad I quit months ago!

I have to say I don't get why people give out about nerfing. Well they give out because their character class isn't the best obviously, but I think nerfing is an important part of the game management.

No matter how well designed a game is, after a few months into it, it's going to become clear that some player classes are more powerful, unbalanced, or just plain ole better than others. This is especially true in persistant environments where the playerbase demands new features and changes all the time. It's impossible to roll out a set of balanced changes to every class at the same time. Instead of allowing character classes to die out, it's important that some sort of rebalancing take place when it becomes obvious that one is significantly better than another for a long period of time.

One method of doing this of course would be to boost up all the classes lagging behind (though I'm sure the groups who didn't get boosted would still call this a nerf). However, it's that kind of a decision that ruins the game. It's no fun running around a game where everyone has the best powers, and everyone has the best equipment and power ups.

Any company running the game isn't doing it to try to ruin the game believe it or not. When they make changes, they make them because they believe it will make the game better (making them more money). Just because new changes may not suit my character class, does not mean they were not the correct decision for the game. No one likes to get nerfed of course, but if it's the right thing for the game, we're just going to have to swallow the bitter pill.

Have you even played SWG? Your post makes sense for most MMORPGs except SWG for the simple reasion that more is broken in SWG than is working correctly!

I'm currently playing SWG. Things may not work how we'd like them (there's alot of features that people have been asking for that haven't been implemented yet), but broken means you can't play that part. I think this is true for only one aspect of SWG, that being the unlocking of Jedi, which has currently been disabled until Patch 10 comes out (*shudder*).

thats the problem with SWG - there is ALWAYS something broken with it...

first the jedi were broken... the unlocking system was stupid, mastering endless professions etc etc etc. Then when you unlocked you realised that the jedi was basically a weak fencer... no fun at all, the light sabre component aquisition was broken... ppl farmed endless crystals by afk macroing low level mobs. Which they eventually nerfed, but not b4 a lot of ppl had a huge advantage, screwing over the newly unlocked...

the whole jedi pvp system is broken because of their obsession with carebearness(tm.)

duping has been in game for god knows how long.

combat balance has never existed in any semblance or form

they keep talking about the big "combat patch" the fix all of everything, however that was like 6 months ago it was supposed to be here.

SoE are nothing if not empty promises, this much I've learned from my experience of playing SWG.

Jedi EXPing was broken..... lots of ppl would get a commando(maybe 2nd account) to flame dot endless groups of rancours, then stand there in adavanced comp armor and tank the rancours till their died, getting ALL the exp. Can you imagine the speed with which they were able to level? Normally when you exp you get like 300-400 Jedi exp of a high level mob such as those Gurkan's on Lok. With this method ALL the mobs exp was jedi exp. So they got something like 4000-5000 JEDI exp per mob. So not only were they getting more than 10 time more exp PER monster, they were also able to kill the monsters incredibly fast using flame dots compared to say a normal jedi who was hacking away at monsters. And off course if your just tanking the mob you don't even need a good light sabre, any basic training sabre will do. Off course this technique was kept secret by those who knew because they were affraid that SoE would eventually nerf it, which they did by adding exp for DOT damage.. but it was too late... almost all the first jedi "masters" were ppl who exped like this...

monster pathing was broken. PPL would plop down harvesters and houses, trap the Krayt dragons and stand there for an hour happily killing them. Ever been to Lok? Ever seen the houses near the krayt graveyard FULL of pearls? Most of these people got them by this method. Not to mention how easy krayts were at the start of the game. Eventually krayts were made tougher, but hey who cares when you can just farm endless pearls by trapping them at your house. I've yet too hear of a single person being banned for doing this, despite threats etc.

imaging climbing through the entire padwan tree in like 2 days using this method, or faster...

I myself made two accounts, and played BOTH simultaneously, ALT-tabbing between them so that I could fight the krayt's without cheating. But hey guess what, krayt dragon on like half health, and some group of 3 comes and takes the kill, wow thats great. Hey damn maybe i'll PK them for stealing the kill.. oh wait, i can't, damn there goes an hours work down the drain, what fun... if they wanted it to be carebear they should have prevented kill stealing, which they didn't, but now someone can steal but you can't do jack, except maybe hurl insults w00t.

so what was done to level these unfair advantages? nothing...
i could go on, but whats the point.. i've moved on, a lot of my friends started playing swg when it came it, i'm the one who stuck around the longest... in the hope that things would "get better", after all every mmorpg isn't perfect on release, takes time to sort things out right?

but at this stage its been over a year? more? The expansion is almost out.. and still large parts of the game are broken...

did i mention the rori borgle bat caves? ever heard of Skill tapes? At the back of the borgle bat caves is a place where there are no monsters that spawn, and piles of "rubbish" where every 30 minutes a new skill tape will spawn. Oh by the way these skill tapes just HAPPEN to be the most valuable commodities in the game, some selling for millions of credits. So yea, sit in the bat cave all day long, and every 30 minutes click as fast as u can on the pile in the hope of getting the skill tape. accumulate then auction them off on the server forums for unlimited credits.. so yea the richest players on the server are the ones who sit in one place all day clicking on a single spot every 30 minutes or so. Wow, great rewarding game play. As far as I'm aware, this "feature" still hasn't been fixed/nerfed. Forget all those hard working crafters who spend hours making stuff to sell to accumulate some cash or those guys who run around doing missions endlessly.

Just attach the uber skill tapes to your armor and your the best. But hey its fair since you had to work so hard for them right? and whats to stop the rest of the player base from sitting there camping that spot endlessly too? Its their fault for being dumb and not doing it.

i don't think even a religious fanatic would have faith for this long.

In fairness though, they've fixed nearly all of the issues that Memnoch mentioned. I think if someone was starting off in SWG now they would have a good time of it, though obviously they would get bored and leave as soon as they had 'finished' their character (levels, items, money etc) as the high-end game (PVP) is really poor.

SOE had lots of good ideas, and had they prioritised things differently either this year they would have had a real winner on their hands. Sadly they spent about 6 months of publishes adding things that nobody wanted or really made use of, instead of fixing the bugs and imbalances that people are complaining about still today.

    Teeth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

Memnoch pretty much summed up most of what is broken in SWG.

But Id like to clarify two things.....

The skill tape farmers didn't even need to play the game to get all the uber loot. Due to ****ing inept game design of having the best loot in the game dropping in containers with no mobs around, the farmers could just set up macros to loot the various containers while AFK.

The Combat Balance was promised 8 months ago. Any any question or request to the Dev's to fix a class was met with "wait for the Combat Balance patch" :(

And the Combat Balance patch is not even half finished ffs. They still are asking players for ideas to fix up the game! Not to mention the total BS from SOE about when it will eventually go live because seeing as how the Dev team have fecked up everything they have done so far its a pretty good bet that JTL will break allot more of SWG, then the fixes for that will need to be done, then fixes for JTL will be needed and this will bring the Combat Balance finally to the game roughly 1 year late!

SOE closed soooooo many threads asking for JTL to be delayed so that the much need combat Balance could be added, then brought in the "characters will be deleted if you quit the game for more than 6 months" crap due to so many players stopping their subscription until the Combat Balance is in. No mmorpg has ever done this. I stopped playing UO in 1998 and went back this year on the free 14 day trial and my characters were still there with all the items and deeds I had 6 years ago.

Hell they closed the official forums to the public when SWG was first launched due to all the bad press! Heres hoping WOW will be done right.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Wow. A whole bunch of aggravated SWG people on the same island as me.

I played a weaponsmith/pistoleer (don't laugh) since the game went live up till a month or so back. Crafting in this game was full of content, but they slowly murdered it with the addition of uber loot:something they promised they were going to avoid
All of the reasons given above killed the game for me, but the final revelation about the Comabt Balance reschedule in favour of the JTL expansion and Blackman's comments on the whole sorry clusterf*** just pushed my cursor toward the Cancel button.

Over population of jedi, broken PvP, melee/rifle domination and the intolerable graphics problems (the horror stories of people with top line rigs that can't get 10 fps in this game are frightening) are gonna kill this game for a new player, even if they don't already die of boredom from their 3 days-to-level master character.

On a sidenote: what servers did you all play on? I recognise Memnoch's handle from the official forums (? I think). I never did get round to making an alt on a euro server.

Bottom line: SW:G = Prettiest looking chatroom in cyberspace.

btw Memnoch, I'm back playing Planetside for a bit, not seriously but just to have a game to play when I'm bored heh.. it's pretty good though they haven't fixed any of the fundemental problems with the game since last year.

I do still play on Farstar as Icey - TKM, Master Fencer, Master Brawler, and recently dropped added pistoleer defences to take up force skills - will get my second account unlock and drop all unnecessary skills afterwards (unless they say I have to keep them to get my second account)

I've got a char on chimaera as well called iliame, master dancer and weaponsmith (never mastered that as clicking to grind was boring as hell).

I've recently started a char on Lowca. I'm considering either going TKM/Master Medic/Master Artisan, to loot AV PPs and build full units, or going Master BH, with pistoleer skills, and getting a nice Slave 1 when JTL comes out. Had always wanted this but JTL's been so long in the wait.

I think a lot of people want JTL over combat rebalance though. Consider this - not everyone PvPs. Though I do PvP a lot, i'm happy with the fact that I can kill a dark jedi guardian 1v1 (but you rarely get 1v1 with the gank squads). Poison/disease packs have also pleased me as I can stack up some defence against this, and PvP to my hearts desire when i'm not expecting my HAM bar to drop instantly after 1 hit.

The thing about the game is that the borgle cave isn't the only thing that can get you a lot of cash. I have to admit that with a little buying and selling recently with loot kit parts, i've managed to get about 20 mil in about a week without having to do anything more than traveling between stores, and trolling the auction tabs/forums. Though in saying this, I could have either gone to dant and got in a solo group to grind cash for a few hours (about 2mil every 3 hours) or do my personal favourite - solo the Corvette.

Yeah..the corvette. The supposed tough dungeon within the game. Isn't it a bit sad that I can solo it? Just go in, and loot what I want, and complete the mission each time. Though i'm not going to say anything obviously because it's a way of me making cash. But if the game worked you'd need a group to do this.

I'm really of 2 minds about the whole group situation on this game. I like being able to go it alone. That's the idea of a BH which I had originally gone in for, but opted after about 8 months of getting my ass kicked, to FOTM - uber defence stacker. I'd love to do group missions, but you tend to find it's dependant on skills, and a lot of people don't bother co-ordinating. Add that to the fact that it's sometimes difficult getting the numbers of people to do the missions in the first place as they all are either too weak, or want to solo things once they've leveled up.

But now we get to the final gripe - the village!

"Lets change the way people get to jedi. They'll still need to grind....but we don't want them crying.....so lets make them grind badges. Yeah...badges are easy enough. OK now what? What if this doesn't put people off? OK we'll make them have to go to a village completely on the far side of a planet on the far side of a galaxy - maybe they won't go there. OK now what else? I know! Lets make it almost impossible to level quickly as we can say they can only learn 1 skill box per cycle....and we can make the cycles every few weeks. Sounds great! This should lower the amount of people wanting to grind jedi. The server jedi population will even out after this and we'll all be sitting happy :D"

So what happens? Everyone fecks off to the village and spends all day around there grinding fps on dath. Result, cities now empty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I walked through Anchorhead yesterday and noticed for the first time that it actually has rebel NPCs there! Never before had I known this because never before had they stayed alive after they spawned. AH was a hub of PvP activity..and now it's a ghost town.

Corolag - the most densly populated city in the game. Now more than half empty. Barely anyone around selling items or buffing....

Good work devs!! You've killed the game with your backwards ideas and complete stupidity! Honestly, the best way to do this game would have been to remove Player Jedi and add devs or CSR agents in as jedi who show up now and again - maybe at player events.

Though i'm still staying for the people, and i'm waiting for JTL - I want a twitchy game. I'll test it, and if I don't like it I MIGHT cancel SWG. Even with the above though, I can still keep myself entertained, so i'm not too bothered :D
