I'm taking part in a trial of fibre optic based DSL in D16 with €ircom. These are the speeds that I am getting.

    www.u.tv/speedtest

948592 bytes transferred in 1.453 secs

    5.1 Mbit

    www.dslreports.com

    2004-08-22 14:30:14 EST: 672 / 767
Your download speed : 688267 bps, or 672 kbps.
    A 84 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 785426 bps, or 767 kbps.

And it's free (until January) :D

Ok now if someone calculates the time it took RADSL to be available from the time of the first DSL trials then we should have a pretty accurate figure of when we will all be using this! :P

I'm in work at the mom. But last night I was pinging eircom.net in about 30 msec.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

2-3 years methinks. Add another 2 for the price to become affordable, natch. :)

After that, you'd better line up some counselling - imagine the withdrawal symptoms going from this back to plain old RADSL?!

Worse than going from dsl back to dial up, I'd say..........

that would indicate that the dreaded interleving is possibly still enabled even on that amazing product, I was hoping you would say pinging boards more like 10ms to 20ms range and about 20 to 25ms to jolt.

Is this fibre-optic to the curb that's tested by people who are really near an existing exchange hence requiring no new cabling, or what's the story?

Is D16 not an NTL broadband area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 520 ✭✭✭frodi

    Pinging €ircom 8 msec
Pinging boards 8 to 17 msec

You're right I will need counselling when this is over.

A few traceroutes might be nice, frodi.

    Try to www.boards.ie www.jolt.co.uk www.bbc.co.uk and www.microsoft.com

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 520 ✭✭✭frodi

you'll have to give me simple instructions how to do these and capture results.
    Running XP Pro

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,143 ✭✭✭spongebob

    eg

    tracert www.jolt.co.uk > c:\jolt.txt

when the tracert completes the prompt appears again, there is a text file called jolt in the root of the c: drive and you open it and copy the contents

    for a ping try

    ping www.jolt.co.uk -t > c:\joltping.txt

hit control c or control x after 10 seconds and the file will be writter then .

    start -> run

    cmd.exe

    'ok'

    tracert www.boards.ie

<leave it run, then copy it and paste the results in here. repeat for each.>

<<Mucks way ^^ will work just as good>>

Only parts of it, only parts. For example, ballyroan road isn't

    Strange.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,321 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

Those pings are very nice indeed! Surely €ircon will afto trow us a bone later on in autumn because by then NTLs BB will be available to quite a few ppl in Dublin and those numbers will only increase ( crosses fingers ) and €ircon's current offering is laughable compared to NTLs. Maybe a 1Mbit for the more expensive home package by Jan/Dec...? This may very well be out in 2 years or a little more but it will be a biz offering.....at least at first.

When the original eircom DSL trials finished, users were told that they could keep using the service for €108/month. How much would you be prepared to pay to keep using the service you've got now?

Perhaps more to the point, how much would your neighbours be prepared to pay?

I wouldn't pay that for it. Doubt that most of the neighbours would either. I'll just go shopping aroung for the best deal from all the available suppliers.
