there is an open source project called celestia
Its an space simulator, by far the best I have seen, its real-time uses open-gl and is simply awesome. There are full star maps available and much much more, including models of space craft, and real textures obtained from staelites, check out the links on the site, for all sorts of extra third party add-ons.
It supports windoze mac and linux,
