Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

UEFA are to investigate possible links between Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Russian side CSKA Moscow after the clubs were drawn in the same group of the Champions League.

The probe will look into CSKA’s £30m (€44.5m) three-year sponsorship deal with Sibneft, the Russian oil giant in which Abramovich holds the majority shareholding.

UEFA communications director William Gaillard said: “We are going to look into it and see whether there is a controlling interest by Mr Abramovich with two teams in the same group.

“We have to find out whether it is a controlling interest or not. We may already have the facts to decide to dismiss it as a problem but it has to be looked into thoroughly.

“If it was found that Mr Abramovich had a controlling interest in CSKA Moscow and Chelsea they could not both take part in the competition. He would have to decide which team took part.

“We have to have this transparency under EU competition laws and we will carry out the necessary checks immediately.”

Abramovich is a close friend of CSKA president Yevgeny Giner and was a guest in his personal VIP box in Moscow on two occasions earlier this year.

Under current regulations, no person is allowed a controlling interest in two clubs playing in the same competition but UEFA will have to decide whether the sponsorship deal counts as any conflict of interest or whether Abramovich has any other interest in CSKA.

If Abramovich does have a controlling interest in CSKA he will most likely keep Chelsea in the CL therefore CSKA would be out. I don't think Mr.Abramovich would be a very popular man in Russia. :D

What team would take CSKA's place? Rangers?

I actually doubt they'll be kicked out TBH.

Why should they be kicked out?
It's not either teams fault that they've been drawn in the same group.
Why not randomly swap one of them with another team in a different group?

the craic would start if they both progressed, would they have to move everyone again ??

I dont think Rangers should go through, the team that lost by the least amount of goals (away+home)

Why should either team have to go out?
Can't somebody be involved with two teams?
It's surely up to UEFA to accomadate both of the teams.
    They're both there on merit.

Its just the same as a team can't meet another from the same country in the group stage but can from then on. If they knew about this before hand they would have been drawn in seperate groups and everythings ok from then on.

Its actually EU law, rather than a UEFA rule. Abramovich would have the choice to either end his controlling interest in one of the clubs (!) or have one of them dismissed from the competition.

You really think Abrahimovic is gonna be caught out by something like this? He'll just have any conflicting details changed around so it looks like the sponsorship is nothing but sponsorship (assuming it's not anyway) and UEFA won't be able to do anything.

or give whatever control he has in CSKA moscow , to a close friend or relative .

Interesting situation - Club or Country !

Anyone care to take a guess at who he would choose if pushed ? If my understanding is right he is no longer welcome in Russia but would his soul let him choose Chelsea over his homeland, interesting situation ahead for him and UEFA.
