Hey im moving to belfast for uni in september and i have never done any martial arts before. I want to start a class in a martial art that is physical and involves more striking than self defense (not because i wanna win drunken brawls but cause i would find it more fun). I dont know much about it and wondered if anyone could direct me toward a class near the university area in belfast. thanks

You could do some flexibility work, flexibility being the most important attribute to prevent injuries and increase your range of motion. Try yoga.

You could do some cardio work, cardio being the most important attribute in self defence and in any sport/martial art. Get a good fitness video. Some MMA combat fitness tapes/DVDs are really good for this.

Running long distance isnt what you are after to improve your "fighting fitness". You should do high intensity exercises to best improve this. Colm O'Reilly has a quick guide to cardio conditioning on his website Two Kings MMA. If you look under XVT you'll see some Cardio advice.

Otherwise, I cant load it up at the moment, but Chris Brennan (MMA fighter/coach) has excellent diet and fitness advice on his website www.chrisbrennan.com! Its hardcore...

    Hope that helps,

    Colum

Some sites for Cardio & Conditioning (specific to Fighting/SD)

Crossfit - Excellent site offering a ton of exercises that will build you up.
www.trainforstrength.com - Scrapper's bodyweight exercises: Well revered site by MMA practitioners worldwide.
Bodybuilding.com - Articles and information on conditioning for MMA.
Veloforce - Sports Specific Training and exercise Principles.
Peak Performance - Although geared towards running, this site has a wealth of information on all aspects of athletic training.
Grapplers Gym - Articles, Exercises and much more for Wrestlers/MMA practitioners.

Like Columok said, long distance running won't directly benefit your fighting fitness as long distance is aerobic and fighting is predominantly short burst, high intensity (anaerobic). I still like long runs, just because I like running.

    Peace,
    Colm
