Local Loop Unbundling can become a reality in the UK after Ofcom proposes a 70% price slash, to be implemented from December.
Shared unbundling will be reduced to 2.26 Sterling or about 3.35 euros per month.
See document on the London Stock Exchange News Service.

Comreg has so far not published its proposals and while Doherty's utterings earlier in the year ("something that suits Eircom" did not sound encouraging, he might surprise us and Eircom shareholders.

Ireland has the highest LLU pricing in Europe, and the whole LLU is a joke so far.

So lets assume for a moment that someone in ComReg wants a LLU price of 4 Euros a month. (We'll give them the benefit of the doubt its more likely to be 16 Euros) Equivalent to the UK and allows a little for higher costs etc in Ireland.

    Eircom want 40 Euro

So they meet in the middle and say 20 Euro

Once more Eircom gets what it wants and ComReg gets to say "We reduced Eircoms LLU pricing proposal by 50%".

And the DMCNR does what? Not a lot really because ComReg is acting entirely within its powers, Eircom have co-operated with ComReg and there’s bugger all that can be grabbed as a lever against the pricing structure.

Irish media sucks this up like the proverbial French whore and all is well in telco land. Apart from the consumer but who listens to them anyway.

That's where IrelandOffline needs to come in and say "Actually, these are the facts ..." I'd like to see the membership used for this. Maybe another mailinglist for press cuttings. Anytime something in the press is mentioned about an area we can comment on we mail the list saying: "The Undependent stated the following X=Y+Z, the facts are incorrect, there are the facts X=Y-Z . We would like you to make the journalist aware of this. Please email or write to the following people educating them to the true facts "

This can be used for newspapers, radio shows, tv shows etc. I'm sure the journalists and news organisations will start listening once again, like they did previously. Once a good relationship is built with the journalists, we can educate the consumer more.
