    DAVENPORT TO WEST HAM
Coventry are livid after learning that Tottenham could loan out new signing Calum Davenport to a fellow Championship club, after just securing his services from the Sky Blues this week for £3m. Coventry chairman Mike McGinnity told the Birmingham Post: "We asked Tottenham to let us have him back on loan ourselves until the end of the season and they said 'no', so what can we do?" West Ham are the club believed to be close to landing the 21-year-old centre-back.

With Spurs having bought Defoe, Kanoute and Carrick in recent times, and Rebrov, Zamorra and Etherington goin in the opposite direction, have West Ham become a feeder club for Spurs? :D

No - their money is as good as anyones! And if you look at it from the players perspective, you can play for either club without moving house!

The problem is our moneygrubber chairman Terry Brown's inexorable greed, apathetic attitude towards the football and contempt for the fans.
He's used the squad as his personal get-out-of-jail card for the past 4 years, selling to keep the Company afloat and thus himself at the helm.

TB has dismantled what promised to be one of the greatest English-grown teams ever produced.

Here's a comprehensive list of when and to where those players went:

Rio Ferdinand - £18m, Leeds United (December 2000)

Considered by many to be the catalyst of our downfall, West Ham sold Rio Ferdinand to Leeds just before Christmas 2000 despite having previously issued a string of denials refuting a deal. Hammers Chairman Terry Brown hailed the deal as the last big domestic transfer; 12 months later Leeds sold Ferdinand to Manchester United for a then world record fee of £29m. Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp threw away the £18m on a string of second rate replacements, drunks and misfits.

    Frank Lampard - £11m, Chelsea (July 2001)

The sale of Ferdinand effectively told the rest of the squad that the club had no ambition - and with best buddy Rio gone, Frank was sure to follow soon. It took six months or so and the sacking of his father and uncle to persuade him, but when Chelsea stepped in he had little hesitation in making the move across town. Hailed at the time as a hugely inflated fee, it's Chelsea who are having the last laugh.

    Glen Johnson - £6m, Chelsea (July 2003)

The one that shocked supporters more than any other (bar perhaps the Rio sale). The hugely popular Johnson, who had made just 14 appearances for West Ham was the first to go in a summer which saw a string of first team players leave Upton Park (despite Terry Brown famously stating 'while one or two players may leave in the summer, the outward movement of players will not be drastic').

    Joe Cole - £6.5m, Chelsea (July 2003)

Relegation for the Hammers - no doubt spurred on by the loss of players such as Ferdinand and Lampard - guaranteed wholesale changes at Upton Park as the club set about reducing a wage bill which, at the time, exceeded an astonishing £40m per year. Rather than taking a gamble on retaining Cole in a push for instant promotion, the club sold him to Chelsea for £6m - less than a month after Terry Brown had dismissed a reported bid of £5m from the Blues as 'derisory'.

Jermain Defoe - £7m plus Bobby Zamora, Tottenham (January 2004)

Not strictly home grown as he was poached from Charlton as a 16-year-old, but Defoe still qualifies as he spent his formative years at West Ham. Destined for great things he may be, but having become utterly dejected at watching his team mates sold left, right and centre there was little choice but to part company with the 21-year-old striker.

    Michael Carrick - £3.2m, Tottenham (August 2004)

The final nail in the coffin. Carrick, like Cole and Defoe before him had (not surprisingly) refused to sign a new contract with the Hammers and having been told to find another club opted for Tottenham despite interest from several Premiership outfits. A sad day for Hammers fans, as he became the sixth - and final - home grown English international to say goodbye to Upton Park.

In addition to the above players, the Hammers have also lost Trevor Sinclair (a current English international at the time of his sale) to Manchester City (£2.5m), and David James - also to Manchester City - for around £1.5m - meaning the Hammers had earned around £56m from the sale of the eight players.

Six of those eight - Ferdinand, Lampard, Johnson, Cole, Defoe and James - are currently involved with the England team, whilst no doubt Michael Carrick will once again be introduced to the squad in the near future.

Scant consolation us for West Ham fans, who must be wondering just how the club managed to throw it all away.

“They fly so high, nearly reach the sky, then like my dreams they fade and die”

Where you get this from? when did Harry get 18 million to spend on players???? give a list of how the 18mil was spent!! if you check into it he was given less than half this for new players and was he not sacked 6 months later before he even got the chance to spend any of it?

In regards to the main point not sure if Davenport will move!! why wud u bother going back into Div 1(or watever it is called now) if you have finally moved out......he wud prob rather a move to a PL team in Jan on loan or will try and battle it out for a startin place!!

Harry spent the money not only on transfer fees but on massive wages for fat lazy wasters. Some were well past their best with no chance of a sell-on fee and other players whose wages killed us in the short term.

    Frederic Kanoute Lyon J 3 700 000 15-05-2000
    Nigel Winterburn Arsenal 22-06-2000
    Davor Suker Arsenal Free 28-06-2000
    Rigobert Song Liverpool J 2 500 000 28-11-2000
    Aboubakar Camara Liverpool J 2 200 000 21-12-2000
    Ragnvald Soma Bryne J 800 000 17-01-2001
    Christian Dailly Blackburn R J 1 750 000 18-01-2001
    Svetoslav Todorov Litex Lovech J 500 000 23-01-2001
    Hayden Foxe Hiroshima Free 13-03-2001
    Christian Bassilla Rennes 23-08-2000
    Darren Peacock Blackburn R 05-09-2000
    Kaba Diawara Paris SG 21-09-2000
    Hannu Tihinen Viking Stavanger 06-12-2000
    Sebastien Schemmel Metz L 19-01-2001

Looking at the list of Redknapp's buys it just reminds me of how he basically relied upon the home grown talent, most of the good players he brought in left again not that long after and there weren't many of them (good ones).

There were not just one or two players on high wages under Redknapp - Bassila cost a million for one season for example and as far as I remember seeing figures quoted for, nearly the whole squad were vastly overpaid. Are you forgetting that this bunch of also rans were the 5th highest paid squad in The Premiership when Redknapp left - having only just avoided relegation ?

Player like gary charles on over a million a year for four years , minto the same, both with over a million pound fees if I remember correctly, the spending of the Rio money was and always will be redknapps failing, and the mystery surrounding some of the deals in that time, were the reason behind him leaving, and he had to leave for those irregularities.

But I'm not blaming Harry for our current predicament - I blame the board. In transfers alone they have raked in £35m from transfer dealings in the last 6 years, not to mention the TV money, gate receipts and finishing bonuses.

Back on the Davenport thing - he has a choice. To play first team football or not. He probably won't get into the Spurs first team this season with King, Richards, Naybet etc there ahead of him. So he might come and play for us.

    From BBC

Tottenham's England U-21 defender Calum Davenport has joined West Ham on what Spurs say is a "short, flexible loan".
Davenport, 21, was signed recently from Coventry for £3m but Spurs feel he is not ready for the Premiership yet.

Sporting director Frank Arnesen said: "It was important Calum went on loan to a club where he would get first-team football to enhance his experience.

"It was equally important the move was to a London club so he would be able to train with us on an occasional basis."

Interesting turn of events. Probably means a stay of execution for Richards, and with Naybet not having too many years left it may mean we'll keep Deano altogether.

    Bet Coventry are delighted

Coventry have no right to be upset, they sold him!

The fee wasn't £3m either - The Sky Blues will receive an initial £1.1million for Davenport, with the rest of the fee payable for appearance-based clauses.

that is blatent trolling, and i for one am sick and tired of this hypocrtical situation of the moderator of the soccer boards banning anyone whos opnion he doesnt like, and yet, is happy to make smart arse, trolling, spiteful jibes at spurs when ever he feels fit.

Wow someone has some SERIOUS issues! How does Gandalfs comment about West Ham in any way constitute a "spiteful jibe" against Spurs? You have a bad case of paranoia there, mate.

was never a fan of richards to be honest. pretty solid defender, but doesnt add anything the way a great defender such as Desailly or tony adams used to, and definately not as skillful as john terry or even rio ferdinand.

8 mil was defiantely far too much for a good central defender. still, i think with ledley king and anthony gardner coming back into fitness, we are not at a lose for the future. have been really impressed with naybet. not bad for an old man :)

i think we should trade richards in as soon as possible. wonder if the arsenal would accept him for thierry henry? :D

has naybet played all four games this season?

yep. actually, the back line hasnt changed for the first couple of matches, except for Noe coming in at right back instead of Phil Ifil.
mendes and Davis there as well, with redknapp, brown, jackson and atouba switching on the right and left.
first time in a decade ive seen a solid spurs side in defense and midfield. and at least 2 world class strikers up front :)

although, when we get henry, we will have to play 3 up front ;)

Coventry City remain outraged that a player they don't own will not be playing for them again.

Coventry City reacted angrily yesterday when Calum Davenport, the player they sold to Tottenham Hotspur before the transfer deadline, was loaned out to their Championship rivals West Ham United.
The Sky Blues could net £3m from the sale of the England Under-21 defender but are furious that a player who started the season in their team will now be competing against them and have called for a change in Football League rules.

"I find Tottenham's action totally unacceptable," said the Coventry chairman Mike McGinnity. "What they have done is disgraceful, especially as we thought they might send the player out on loan and asked them to let us keep him until the end of the season. Obviously there's nothing we can do about this but a change in the rules is necessary. What other business would allow one of your assets to end up with a competitor under these circumstances?"

Spurs, however, remain unmoved by McGinnity's anger. "It was important that Calum went on loan to a club where he would get first-team football to enhance his experience," said Frank Arnesen, Spurs' sporting director. "It was equally important that the move was to a London-based club so that he would not have to relocate again."

The Football League spokesman John Nagle confirmed there was nothing in the rules to prevent such a scenario but said clubs could propose changes to them.
