Ronan Bennett, who wrote The Hamburg Cell (shown on C4 last week) and is up for the Booker with Havoc, In Its Third Year, is reading in Waterstones on Monday at 6pm. (6/9/4)

Did anyone go? I'm reading his book Havoc...something something.... and it's excellent so far - gripping, tightly written, a cross between Banville for sharp, delicate observation and Eco for thrilleriness.

I think it's important for writers to have mentors, and to listen with great attention to what the best are writing. Hearing good writers read their work is a brilliant tuning mechanism, as well as an inspiration.

Couldn't go myself, mind, because I had to be up at five to get on a plane.
