I have to do a dissertation in college and I chose as my subject, Roleplaying games. I'm gonna go over how I started, what kind of people play(as opposed to the stereotypes)female gamers etc you get the idea.
However I'd like some help, so if any of you guys/gals know of any sites/books etc that would be of use or if you have the time to give me your two cents worth then e-mail me.

There was one done in Maynooth about 5 years ago - LoLth I think has a copy of it still. As far as I remember, the group came out as being complete psychos and the DM as a megalomaniac control freak.

yeah, amazing how accurate it was! smile.gif

Don't know if I still have it though.
Seemingly there's some psychobabble book all about roleplaying and the personality traits that can be seen in character choice and play style. I'm sure you could find a copy in the sociology/psychology section of the college library.

Yer best bet is to sit in with a group for a few months and take notes, sort of a "fly on the wall" type thing. Another angle could be the recent proliferation of Computer RPGs and how a new mindset (in the of computer nerds) is polluting the roleplayer geek gene pool.

    hehe....

I liked _The Munchkins' Handbook_, the one that divided players into 4 categories (Real Roleplayer, Real Adventurer, Real loonie and Real Munchkin).

The Real Roleplayer would do whatever was in character.
The Real Adventurer would do whatever was most heroic.
The Real Loonie would do whatever was most silly/amusing. (Which usually included suicidal.)
The Real Munchkin would do whatever gave the most plusses!

never saw that test before ...

Your type is: AKS. 2% of respondents so far fall into that type.

The numbers below represent percentage of how many times you selected a given suite when given the chance. Since there are 15 questions for each suite out of 30 total, the number will add up to 200%. 50% thus means average for each suite, and 100% is the maximum score.

Your answers were split as follows: Achiever 60%
    Killer 53%
    Socializer 46%
    Explorer 40%

People of type AKS play the following MUDs. Click on the name to see the MudConnectory entry, and on the profile to see detailed statistics from the database:

Bad Trip (16% of 12 are AKS)
Tarmon Gaidon (14% of 7 are AKS)
Shattered World (13% of 15 are AKS)
Aarabela (12% of 8 are AKS)
Gateway to the Night (12% of 8 are AKS)
Following known mud.people most closely match your profile (number describes relative difference):

George Reese - Creator of Nightmare / Dead Souls LP mudlibs (8)
Russ Taylor - Creator of the ROM code base (14)
Damion Schubert - Lead Designer of Ultima Online 2 and Meridian 59 (18)
Melvin "Fusion" Smith - Creator of MUD++ (the first open source C++ MUD), co-developer of Envy (30)
Henry McDaniel - Creator of the "Encylopedia of MUDs" project and HUB MUD codebase (38)
