First week of the O2 wireless trial in my town, so far it's pretty sweet :D

    speedtest.jpg

I have been smacking my head in delight all week...
The trial is running for the next 3 months, not many on it at the moment so the speed available will probably drop a bit, but we will see.

What is this? First I heard of it.

They're trialling wireless in a few towns round the country, mine being one of the lucky ones.

uhh, what town(s) ? be more vague, please
"my town" means nothing to anyone

    mehhhh

My town is Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, no idea where else they are running it. I'm sure if it was in your area you would have heard about it. I also have no clue if they are going to roll it out anywhere after the trial, though if it stays as good it is now and isn't too expensive I will dump my ISDN line in a flash.

Glencolumkille in Donegal and one other . What is the kit at your end, does it require an external aerial install or is it an all in one box ?

The installer told me what spec it was but I've forgotten, its 5.? Ghz, with a rectangluar slab on an outside wall. Seems to go about 5miles with a good signal. Its not line of sight, but they did a site test first and the external antenna is pointed directly at the main transmitter and tested before they install. It travels through many obstructions so trees/buildings dont seem to matter as much.

One of the people I work with has this service a few months in Waterford city, not sure opf the speed but he seems fairly happy with it.

oooh. sweet. but i bet they're restricting it to places wihtout broadband, so we're stuck for now!

    dammit. need more speed.

actually, i could almost live with the speed if there wasn't this damn cap.

carrackmines and glencolmcille are the two trial sites, though i believe they're using different technologies in each. there was another trial, also in carrackmines, that finished earlier this year, i think that also used 5.8ghz equipment.

who makes the box, is it labelled on the box itself? also did they tell you anything about contention, bandwidth, caps, etc.

Did they give you any idea what download speeds you could expect? Have you seen it go faster than ~320kB/sec ?

I would have imagined you would be under an NDA for a trial like that..........no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭Spunj

Hey, must have missed the earlier replies. To answer the questions asked:

No NDA, in fact nothing signed at all. Also, nobody asked to keep it quiet.

    The equipment is labelled 'alvarion'.

There are no caps, throttles or otherwise. This is both good and bad at the moment, as anyone has access to the full backhaul (currently 4mbit).

There have been a few problems over the last 5 days or so, it seemed like some unpatched/hacked machine(s) or some download monkey were sucking the bandwidth 24/7 leaving pings and download rates poor. I believe they are looking into it and this evening things are back to being normal.

As it's a trial there are bound to be teething problems but I like that fact that I can grab a download super fast, it is up to the people on the trial to respect the others I suppose. I'm sure if/when it goes live there will be the usual throttles and caps, maybe even before the end if this reoccurs though I'd rather it like it is now :).

    Hi Spunj,

I've been trying to find out more about o2's plans for rolling out wireless BB. However the people I talked to in O2 knew nothing about it, do you have a contact within O2 I could speak with ?

    Thanks
    M.

elexes - I think there around 40 or so on the trial.

Mr_Man - I don't have a number at the moment but I will try to get a name and number for someone (if allowed) and I will PM it to you in the next couple of days if I get it (no way I'd make it public).

Was talking to someone from O2 about it, try ringing head office, then getting transferred to network engineering section (I think). It's guys in there that are running it so to speak.

Thats very sneaky, do you not think that the lads from o2 visit this site and would contact people if they wanted to offer them a trial?

I'm sure they do, but there's no NDA etc. and tbh I can't see widespread emails going round o2 telling them not to accept calls to that section.

Why do you have access to the email system in o2?

Those trials are well planned out an the people are picked with intent, they dont just flick through the phone book.
