I've emailed UTV a week ago with this question but they haven't replied.

I want to upgrade to broadband and I have availability but the problem is both myself and my housemate each have a computer. I currently let him use my internet account (utvip xl) but what options do I have if I upgrade to broadband?

1 - can he still use the account with a 56k modem or will he have to pay local call charges for internet use

    or

2 - can he buy an extra broadband modem and use my account, and how much will it cost?

This is easily done with a home network, either wired or wireless. Take a look back through this forum and the wireless one, most people do this, and you'll find out what to do.

In fact, this sticky thread at the top of the forum is probably a good place to start:

He can still use an analog modem on the line, even when you've got a broadband connection. Of course, he'll be paying almost as much for dialup as you're paying for broadband, but it's technically possible, if that's what you wanted to do.

No, you can only have one "broadband modem" connected to any DSL line. But you can connect more than one PC to certain Broadband modems. (Not the one that UTV provides, though). So you can bin the modem that UTV provides, and spend between €60 and €100 for a replacement that will allow you to connect up to 4 PCs to the broadband connection, or you can pay UTV an extra €50 for an ethernet modem, and another €20 or so for a switch to enable you to plug both PCs into that ethernet modem. (And, if your PCs don't have ethernet cards, you'll need about €30 to get two ethernet cards and some cable).
